Job Description

Fortune Newsroom Fellowship, January-June 2023

Fortune is hiring smart and energetic early-career journalists to join our newsroom for six-month fellowships running January to June 2023.

Fellowship candidates must have graduated from undergraduate or graduate school, and must have previous newsroom experience, such as one or more prior newsroom internships and/or significant experience at a collegiate publication.

Fellows are an important part of Fortune’s daily editorial operations. They work closely with Fortune newsroom staff to research, report, write and produce our coverage. They also learn about the day-to-day workings of a storied and award-winning digital and print business publication, and receive on-the-job training and direction from newsroom leaders.

You will…

  • Be assigned to a specific beat on a desk or team, such as News, Success, Well, Personal Finance, Leadership, Finance, Tech, Crypto, Audience, Art, Photo, or Video
  • Pitch, report and write your own stories, likely a mix of quick hits and in-depth pieces, driven by the needs of your desk
  • Craft explainers, profiles, trend pieces, and evergreen articles to help readers understand key topics, companies, prominent players, and trends
  • Participate in team brainstorms
  • Both pitch stories and take assignments
  • Work both independently and in collaboration with colleagues
  • Contribute to our flagship rankings lists like the Fortune 500 and/or to our industry-leading newsletters
  • Ensure our coverage includes a diversity of ideas, perspectives, and voices
  • Uphold Fortune’s standards of journalistic rigor, accuracy, and fairness
  • Receive training and mentorship from experienced Fortune journalists to learn and grow

The right candidate…

  • Thrives on economics and business news and/or demonstrates interest, enthusiasm, willingness, and ability to learn it
  • Values and balances speed and stamina with accuracy and completeness
  • Reads a lot of news from a breadth of sources and has a pulse on the most important stories, and on what would resonate with the Fortune audience
  • For writing-based desks: Writes clean, accurate, and insightful copy on deadline
  • For video: Skill in editing in Adobe Premiere; familiarity with camera and lighting
  • For art: Skill in creating photo illustrations and graphics; familiarity with creative tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
  • For photo: Understanding of photography, especially photojournalism, and familiarity with photo editing programs like Photoshop
  • Can use time wisely to juggle multiple assignments at once while being able to pivot when an important development drops
  • Is a quick study, infinitely curious, and always has ideas for stories and fresh angles
  • Can take and internalize direction to grow in the role
  • Can communicate professionally and effectively in a remote or hybrid environment and work comfortably alongside seasoned professionals

To apply...

Please submit the following three items:

  • Your resume
  • Three work samples that represent your best work, either as links or as pdfs (for paywalled content)
  • In lieu of a standard cover letter, a letter or memo responding to the following questions:
    • Why are you interested in joining Fortune as a fellow, and which desks/verticals are you most interested in and why?
    • In a nutshell, what do you feel you would bring to the table as a Fortune fellow, and how do you see this opportunity enabling you to learn and grow?
    • What’s one piece of Fortune content — a story, a video, a podcast episode, a ranked list, a newsletter edition, a social post, an illustration — that you found particularly compelling, and why?
    • What’s one story you would pitch, and for which section?

Please submit the resume and memo as pdfs, using your name in the file names (please, no “resume.pdf” or “fortunememo.pdf”!).

Fortune’s headquarters is in NYC, but our editorial team is distributed across time zones. This opportunity is based in the US—New York City or elsewhere across the country. NYC-based staff are welcome and encouraged to work out of our office; those based elsewhere are typically remote. Fortune fellows work 35-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday (excluding company holidays), and earn $30/hour.

Applications will close Nov. 21, 2022.
