  • Report and write your own stories, likely a mix of quick hits and in-depth pieces, and/or curate, produce, and package Fortune coverage
  • Both pitch stories and take assignments; participate in brainstorming sessions
  • Craft explainers, profiles, trend pieces, evergreen articles, social videos, and/or newsletter editions to help readers understand key topics, companies, prominent players, and trends
  • Contribute to our flagship lists like the Fortune 500 and to our industry-leading newsletters
  • Work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ensure our coverage includes a diversity of ideas, perspectives, and voices
  • Uphold Fortune’s standards of journalistic rigor, accuracy, and fairness
  • Learn the inner workings of our newsroom and company

Ideal candidates:

  • Thrive on economics and business news and/or demonstrates interest, enthusiasm, willingness, and ability to learn it
  • Value and balance speed and stamina with originality, accuracy, and completeness
  • Consume a lot of news from a breadth of sources and have a pulse on the most important stories and on what would resonate with the Fortune audience
  • For writing-based desks: Write clean, accurate, and insightful copy on deadline
  • For video: Skill in editing in Adobe Premiere; familiarity with camera and lighting and with social video platforms like Instagram and TikTok
  • For production: Facility in proofing, packaging, and curating content as well as using digital production tools for web and newsletters
  • Are ambitious, detail-oriented, deadline-driven, able to manage time and juggle multiple assignments, quick to learn, curious, and always have fresh ideas
  • Have a growth mindset; can take and internalize direction to grow in the role
  • Can communicate and work effectively and professionally whether remote, hybrid, or in the office

Some great candidates may not fit neatly into what we’ve described above or have key skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

To apply, please submit the following three items:

  • Your resume
  • Three work samples that represent your best work, either as links or pdfs
  • In lieu of a standard cover letter, a letter or memo responding to the following four questions:
  • Why are you interested in joining Fortune as a fellow, and which desks/verticals are you most interested in and why? (What topics and areas most interest you? Do you want to report and write? Curate and repackage? Dive into newsletter production? Promote content on or create video for social platforms?)
  • In a nutshell, what do you feel you would bring to the table as a Fortune fellow, and how do you see this opportunity enabling you to learn and grow?
  • What’s one piece of Fortune content — a story, a video, a podcast episode, a ranked list, a newsletter edition, a social post, an illustration — that you find particularly compelling, and why?
  • What’s one story you would pitch, and for which section or vertical?

Please submit the resume and memo as pdfs, using your name in the file names (please, no “resume.pdf” or “fortunememo.pdf”!).

Fellows can be based anywhere in the US. NYC-based staff are welcome and encouraged to work out of our headquarters office in Manhattan; we also have offices in Chicago and San Francisco. Those based elsewhere are typically remote.

Fortune fellows work 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday (excluding company holidays), with occasional opportunity for up to 5 additional hours per week. The pay rate is $25.71/hour.

Applications will close May 3, 2023.
