Northern Trust Institute Tax Lead & Senior Tax Counsel

Job Summary:

Strategic head of Tax Advisory as part of a the Northern Trust Institute, a research center dedicated to harnessing the collective experience and expertise of working with complex wealth. The senior member will (1) work with clients and partners on wealth structuring and income tax issues, (2) set the strategic direction for delivering personalized advice based upon source of wealth, demographics, behavioral attributes and life events and (3) will develop Northern Trust's point-of-view as it relates to tax policy and will be required to stay abreast of ongoing policy and tax-related issues key to estate planning and wealth transfer.

Responsibilities include:

• Provide tax guidance for individuals and pass-through entities, as well as executives of public and private companies.
• Evaluate and offer strategic thinking on pre-transaction planning for pre-IPO transactions.
• Monitor tax policy landscape, trends and laws and produce actionable thought leadership
• Meet with clients, answer client questions and establish a community of clients to provide feedback and inform our strategy
• Create a consistent, data driven go-to-market strategy for key life events such as retirement, sale and transfer and train Northern Trust partners
• Collaborate as a member of the Northern Trust Institute leadership team and provide strategic direction as to the delivery of personalized advice

Qualifications:

Candidates should have 10 or more years of experience practicing tax law or tax consulting or compliance. JD,LLM and or CPA. Prior experience with wealth management clients working on wealth structuring and income tax issues is strongly preferred. Below are the knowledge and skills needed.

• Ability to work closely with senior management, partners and clients -- adjusting communication styles to each audience
• Evaluate and offer strategic thinking around tax advisory and personalized advice
• Strong knowledge experience in income tax advisory and compliance
• Ability to manage and coach talent
• Self-motivated and curious; receptive to feedback
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong presentation, writing and public speaking skills

• Ability to travel (mostly domestic)
