Operational Accounting Department Manager II
Job Description
Overview:
This role is responsible for leading multiple operational accounting teams related to various lines of business ensuring the integrity of financial data. It includes responsibilities for the design of accounting flows to support new product offerings, accounting pronouncements and corporate policies. As a member of the Banking Controls Senior Management Team, this leadership role provides strategic direction and manages the planning, development and implementation of resources and initiatives in support of their assigned accounting operations teams. The incumbent will provide representation and approvals on complex, critical, and highly visible projects at the Division and/or Bank-wide level. May also manage COE-wide and/or Division-wide initiatives. The role requires proven accounting acumen, leadership abilities and the ability to cultivate strong relationships with business partners. The successful candidate will also be skilled in developing talent, delivering results and innovation.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage accounting activities for assigned product portfolios while ensuring operational efficiency and targeted results are met.
- Identify accounting impact of new and revised accounting pronouncements, changes to corporate accounting policies, new products and system enhancements. Design and implement any necessary changes to accounting flows.
- Responsible for the research and resolution of discrepancies identified in the Bank's month-end financial close.
- Oversee interim accounting controls of acquired institutions and plan for orderly conversion of acquired balances while mitigating risk of financial loss
- Develop strategies to achieve competitive advantages and supports corporate priorities. Participate in the Division long-term planning process and responsible for implementation of short-term initiatives.
- Responsible for the creation of new and/or revised Department and Division policy and procedures. Provide approval of new methods and procedures to make daily operations more efficient and continuously enhance customer service.
- Responsible and accountable for annual budget process, requisition approval and for providing appropriate level signing authority. Conduct negotiations with outside vendors as necessary.
- May be responsible for the development and implementation of COE/Division project initiatives.
- Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
- Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
- Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or closely related discipline and a minimum of 9 years' operations and/or accounting experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 13 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 9 years' operations and/or accounting experience
Minimum of 3 years' managerial experience
Education and Experience Preferred:
MBA (Master's degree in Business Administration)
CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
Minimum of 7 years' experience in financial services accounting role
Minimum of 7 years' supervisory and/or managerial experience
