Job Description

ABOUT NYSHEX

Have you ever stopped to wonder how your computer, clothes, furniture or household goods made their way to your doorstep? Most likely, almost everything you own arrived here in a container on a container ship. It is a massive industry that we all rely on but don’t think about much because it’s been done the same way for decades without much change or innovation.

NYSHEX is transforming and enabling an industry plagued with inefficiency, volatility, and $23b of economic waste annually. The NYSHEX team is passionate about collaborating with the world’s leading ocean carriers, shippers and forwarders to bring technology and innovation to this industry we love, and we hope that you’ll be part of building this new digital foundation that will have lasting effects for years to come.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As an Operations Lead, you will have the opportunity to join our team at a very early stage. You will play a key role in creating positive member experiences and help to drive contract performance. The Operations Lead will be critical in helping to increase operational effectiveness and efficiency. The role will also provide opportunity to collaborate with various NYSHEX departments and stakeholders in the shipping industry.

At NYSHEX you’ll get to work with a fantastic group of engineers and product managers and have a direct influence on shaping our processes and product. The team here works hard and is comfortable making mistakes, with the understanding that when things go right, it can transform an institutionalized industry.

This is a full-time, hybrid role, reporting to NYSHEX’s Director of Operations. While we're currently operating remotely, NYSHEX will be implementing a hybrid working model in the future - nearly all NYSHEX staff globally will work from a NYSHEX office twice a week, and flexibly for the remainder of the week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a team of top performers that will be responsible for tracking, processing and mitigating contract performance exceptions and defaults
  • Work with the NYSHEX Regional Director of Operations to fine tune existing processes and SOPs to increase efficiency and effectiveness of NYSHEX’s exceptions and default management processes
  • Provide consistent reporting internally to increase organizational awareness of exceptions and defaults
  • Work with NYSHEX Data Operations team to provide external reporting of contract performance and exceptions to ocean carrier members
  • Help increase operational effectiveness (increase % of issue free trades) and efficiency (decrease variable cost per trade) by identifying patters in the data and work closely with carrier customer service and NYSHEX trade management to proactively address reoccurring issues.
  • Ensure NYSHEX Account Management is provided with sufficient data and adequate updates to help them communicate gaps in performance to shipper members
  • Ensure contract defaults are closed in timely manner, the reasons clearly identified and conclusion reached
  • Work closely with NYSHEX product development team to automate manual processes to enhance user experience and increase efficiency
  • Participate as a member of a functional team for special business acquisition projects

QUALIFICATIONS

You are a great candidate for this role if you have:

  • Experience in ocean containerized shipping, preferably 4 years+ in sales, trade and/or customer service
  • Leadership experience in managing an effective team
  • The ability to deliver under pressure and adapt quickly to changes
  • Keen attention to detail
  • A strong focus on process optimization
  • A passion for problem solving
  • The ability to distill complex problems into simple, clean solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset
  • Good organizational skills to support the team
  • Proficiency with MS Office

What you have to look forward to:

Our culture promotes a dynamic, exciting, and challenging work environment with opportunities for learning and growth. Our team is passionate about building great tech and besides being great at their jobs, are also classical musicians, surfers, gamers, and foodies.
