Job Overview

Schedule: Monday-Friday (7:30am-6pm)

On Call Weekends and Evenings as Needed

The Operator Mechanic Wastewater Treatment is responsible for maintaining mechanical equipment through preventive maintenance, completion of daily process control, and the knowledgeable application of results to improve plant functionality. This individual also performs 5S and housekeeping of work areas; cultivates a team and safe work environment; reviews laboratory analysis; conducts inventory supply replacement, and maintains effluent quality below surcharge levels. This position also handles permit compliance, maintains a recycling and conservation mindset, and performs minor plumbing maintenance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance of all equipment and follows all established safety procedures and policies, including but not limited to locking out all equipment before greasing and changing oil in blowers, replacing belts, removing and reinstalling pumps, blowers, and motors
  • Handles daily process control activities including the collection of samples and testing wastewater for pH, COD, TSS, Ammonia, and Phosphorous
  • Performs data entry of all relevant wastewater treatment metrics into systems ensuring accuracy
  • Conducts confined space entries by maintaining knowledge about confined space meters; following all PPE requirements when handling chemicals and, or when working with hand tools that could cause injury to eyes, and utilizing a body harness when working on elevated platforms
  • Performs housekeeping responsibilities, chemical inventory, and proper storage of hazardous and non-hazardous waste
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Analytical, logical thinker, mechanical, open to change
  • Electrical knowledge required and customer service oriented
  • Should have a working knowledge of motor control centers, testing of components, etc.
  • Must be able to utilize laboratory knowledge to make process control decisions on plant operations
  • Must understand loading rates and hydraulics, must be able to work well with other departments to resolve issues, and must be able to work with computers in an office environment
  • Must be able to take raw data and make a case for taking action
  • Does require that the individual is capable of using spreadsheets, PowerPoint and Word
  • Must be knowledgeable about confined space meters, must understand that a clean work environment is key to removing obstacles to slips, trips, and falls
  • Must follow all PPE requirements when handling chemicals or working with hand tools that could cause injury to the eyes
  • Must work safely and utilize a body harness when working on elevated platforms

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 years of education beyond high school in college or technical school
  • Knowledge acquired through 1 to up to 3 years of work experience
  • NC Wastewater License Grade 4, Confined Space Certification (required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Business Associates Degree or Wastewater Treatment Program

Work Environment

Noisy and non-temperature-controlled environment (hot in summer/cold in winter) (Warehouse/Distribution)
