The Courier Journal, winner of a 2020 Pulitzer Prize and a two-time Pulitzer finalist in 2021, is looking for highly motivated individualscapable of contributing right away as interns in Louisville, Kentucky. Participants in this fellowship program will learn to select, edit and digitally optimize opinion content, for publication on multiple platforms. The program also provides one-on-one coaching and mentoring. We are looking for interns who have an interest in working in opinion journalism, communications or have an interest in social media and digital development with the goal of elevating community conversation with the purpose of productive discourse in the public square.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Fellows will work with the opinion editor to select op-eds, guest columns and letters to the editor in a fast-paced news environment. Duties may include selecting, copyediting, fact-checking, headline writing and search engine optimization. Social media work and editorial board participation are also possibilities, as is appearing in front of a camera for social media video creation
- Critical thinking and analytical skills will be encouraged and sharpened.
- Fellows will work independently and closely with the opinion editor to provide perspectives and insights for newsroom and companywide opinion projects identified by senior leadership as part of strategic growth initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree-seeking students currently enrolled at a college or university preferred. Applicantspreferably will have completed two years of college and have previously had at least one internship.
- Well-organized, detail-oriented, adaptable and flexible.
- Excellent communication skills and command of the English language and AP style.
