The Northrop Grumman Undersea Systems business unit is seeking a Principal Engineer Optical/Sr. Principal Engineer Optical with broad technical experience to apply creativity and vision in the portfolio of Undersea Systems programs that are critical to our Long Range Strategic Plan.

The Principal Engineer Optical/Sr. Principal Engineer Optical will be responsible for designs, models, analyzes, and tests optical and electro-optical systems and components, including sensors, lasers, fiber-optics, and telecommunications products. Conducts research and development into phases of physical optics and geometric optics, lasers, laser characteristics, laser maintenance, and broadband optical sources. Applies research of complex optical systems to achieve desired optical manipulations. Develops component specifications, tolerances, simulations and tests procedures for electro-optical systems and components. Uses design-to-cost models, six sigma methodology, and other methods to assure optical design requirements met.

The successful candidate will be responsible for optical system design, assembly, integration and test of electrical/fiber optic (F/O) systems & sensors and shall be experienced in all phases of optical system development from conceptualizing solutions through the design, assembly and testing phases.

The successful candidate's responsibilities will also include use of F/O test sets to enable test and troubleshooting of fiber optic systems and be familiar with test sets for measurement of high speed communication signals. The Staff Optical Engineer will be expected to assist teams through the analysis and troubleshooting of test results as required to evaluate and improve design as well as development of component specifications, tolerances and tests procedures.

The successful candidate will have experience interpreting, evaluating and documenting the empirical results of:
  • Optical spectrum analyzers (OSA)
  • Bit Error Rate Testers (BERT)
  • Optical Backscatter Reflectometer(OBRs)
  • Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer(OTDRs)
  • High speed modulator/demodulator characterization
  • Fusion splicing of specialty fibers / high resolution loss measurement
  • Mechanical fiber routing and management inside of splice enclosures and cabinets

Job Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications for Principal Engineer:
  • Minimum Education / Experience: 5+ years' of experience with Bachelors of Science; 3+ years' of experience with Masters; 0+years' of experience with PhD. Degree must be in STEM related field.
  • An active or current TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph is required.

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Engineer:
  • Minimum Education / Experience: 9+ years' of experience with Bachelors of Science; 7+ years' of experience with Masters; 4+years' of experience with PhD. Degree must be in STEM related field.
  • An active or current TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as an organization spokesperson and advisor to management, co-workers and customers
  • Experience in technical leadership, direction and mentoring to other technical employees in the application of scientific principles, tools and techniques to achieve practical end results.
  • Experience guiding development of advanced fiber optic systems from concept to delivery
  • Experience with subsea cables and connectors.
  • Proficiency in common data analysis tools such as Mathcad, MatLab and Labview.

Salary Range: $106,500.00 - $159,700.00Salary Range 2: $132,100.00 - $198,100.00

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to basepay.
