Optical System Engineer

Summary

The Optical System Engineer role serves as a crucial link between the fields of visual perception, the RL perceptual research groups, and the VR Optical Engineering team. This individual will foster robust collaborations with the applied perception science, user experience research groups and RL research, harnessing their expertise in visual perception and toolsets to enhance our product delivery efficiency and quality.For each specific product or feature objective, the engineer will employ these toolsets to simulate performance at the component, sub-system, and system levels. This process will deliver optical system level design requirements. These system-level requirements will then cascade down to guide discussions on trade-offs and prioritizing key performance indicators (KPIs) in subsystems and components .Beyond requirements development, the engineer will also play a pivotal role in refining experiential simulation tools with XFN partners. These tools will contribute to the evolution for future optics, display, and optical system designs.

Required Skills

Optical System Engineer Responsibilities:

• Develop innovative processes that perceptually validate new concepts and system architectures to improve optical performance and reduce system cost.
• Collaborate closely with the research and perceptual science teams to design experiments and experiential simulations that demonstrate and validate product-level design assumptions and goals for optical systems.
• Create methodologies to translate perceptual requirements into specific targets for optical system, sub-system, and component design.
• Perform requirement flowdown and budgeting to various subsystem requirements. Develop innovative processes to validate requirements across various subsystems.
• Identify and participate in the co-development and improvement of perceptual science tools for rapid prototyping and user experience simulation. Work closely across the optics, display, mechanical, and other cross-functional engineering teams to adapt those tools for product development and to provide fast experiential feedback of system level corner cases based on tolerance analysis and production failure based on inline metrology.
• Up to 20% domestic and international travel.

Minimum Qualification

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience communicating and collaborating in a cross-functional team environment.
• Experience in at least one of the following: Image quality evaluation, Stray light molding and analysis, Camera module or lens testing and characterization, Imaging optics design and manufacturing, Visual Optics, or Optical testing and metrology.
• Experience working in Human Factors, Perceptual Science, Head Mounted Display, VR, AR, eye-tracking systems, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Data Processing.
• Experience in at least one of the following optical software design packages: Zemax, Code V, LightTools, FRED, or ASAP.
• Advanced degree in Vision Science, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
• Demonstrated history of optical system engineering and cross-functional product development.
• Experience in statistical analysis using JMP, MATLAB, R or similar programs
• 3+ years of industry experience in the areas mentioned above.

Preferred Qualification

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong programming skills with experience in at least one of the following: Python, Unity 3D, MatLab.
• Experience in tolerancing analysis in system design.
