Outsourcing Art Director

We are looking for an experienced Outsourcing Art Director to be a part of our Art team. The Outsourcing Art Director will work with the Creative Director, Art Directors, Production, and internal art teams to ensure artistic unity and high standard of quality across game assets created by 3rd party vendors, including environment, weapons, and character assets. 

In this role, you will provide and manage detailed feedback to artists, and help maintain a strong creative relationship between external and internal art teams. The right candidate will vet, hire, manage, mentor, and train integration artists on the Outsource team, while ensuring assets fall within set parameters in regards to performance best practices as well as art style and proper pipeline integration. 

This position will report to the Creative Director. 

Responsibilities

• Work with the Creative Director, Art Directors, Production, and internal art teams to ensure artistic unity and high standard of quality across game assets created by 3rd party vendors, including environment, weapons, and character assets
• Collaborate with other team members to ensure that assets fall within set parameters in regards to performance best practices as well as art style and proper pipeline integration
• Manage, mentor, and train integration artists on the Outsource team
• Convey and maintain these standards with 3rd party vendors to ensure quality is both consistent and high
• Create, iterate, and maintain an outsource pipeline from bid to production to approval
• Participate in outsource budget review and prioritization
• Provide and manage detailed feedback to artists, and help maintain a strong creative relationship between external and internal art teams
• Create tests for vetting new outsourcing contracts, and review tests with the ability to rate test assets as they compare to our internal quality bar
• Establish and maintain relationships with external vendors
• Generate documentation, reference, briefs, and examples of art asset production and procedures to support external vendors

Requirements

• Experience in an Art Director or Art Lead role
• Strong understanding of physically based shaders and rendering
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and teaching skills
• Strong technical skills and understanding of modern game art pipelines
• Strong work ethic, and ability to maintain high quality and consistent progress without constant supervision
• Can both give and take direction well
• Team player and a positive attitude
• Availability to travel to international or domestic vendors as needed for on-boarding or to resolve issues
• Proficiency modeling and texturing game art assets using Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop
• Portfolio that demonstrates expertise in modeling and texturing current-gen game art, including hard surface and organic assets

Preferences

• Experience working directly with outsourcing team or clients as an outsource resource for the creation of game art assets
• Shipped a AAA title on console or PC

The estimated base pay range for this role is: $165,000 —$200,000 USD
