Job Summary
This position performs various paralegal functions in support of the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel. This position is responsible for the management of market conduct activities, litigation and claims management support, department of insurance inquiries, legal research, as well as other routine legal and administrative matters.
Duties and Responsibilities
Market Conduct Support
- Manage the company’s activities regarding state market conduct activities by investigating, researching, drafting responses and responding to regulator requests and examination reports.
- Work closely with the Deputy General Counsel, external counsel, and individuals at all levels of the company throughout market conduct examinations to obtain information necessary to respond to requests by established deadlines.
- Manage company responses to department of insurance inquiries by investigating, researching, and responding to regulator requests.
- Interact with regulators by e-mail, phone, and in person as necessary.
Operations Support
- Provide support to claims and operations departments including but not limited to the review of service requests and claims issues/escalations.
- Assist with review of communications to beneficiaries and policyowners.
- Monitor internal compliance reporting system and notify appropriate business units of regulatory updates as needed.
Litigation Support
- Support the management of litigation matters for the company, including assisting with management and engagement of outside counsel, subpoenas, and the legal billing process.
- Manage litigation deadlines and perform legal research as needed.
- Gather relevant information from a variety of sources and assist with interrogatories and other discovery requests.
Special Projects
- Manage, complete, and provide assistance to the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel on special departmental legal projects as needed.
Experience and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business, English or related field.
- Paralegal certification preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of legal and/or compliance experience, preferably in the life insurance or financial services industry.
- Experience or knowledge of market conduct and/or public company corporate secretarial duties.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Good organizational, administrative, and legal research skills, with aptitude for detailed work.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills necessary to maintain effective working relationships with senior management, executives, boards of directors, other employees, outside attorneys, agents, state insurance department personnel, etc.
- Ability to influence individuals over whom no direct management authority exists.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment while addressing multiple projects and responsibilities.
- Knowledge of Word and Excel required. Knowledge of database applications preferred.
