Job Description

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

Our growing legal team is building out its litigation and regulatory investigation and enforcement practice. You will be working in a cutting edge and fast paced environment, where disruptive technologies and unconventional thinking are the norm. We are seeking an experienced litigation paralegal who can support our growing third party civil requests team, as well as our other litigation teams as needed. This position will report to our Director, Associate General Counsel, Litigation, who leads the Consumer, Commercial, and International Litigation Teams and who is based in the US.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • With guidance from attorneys and other members of the litigation team, log, calendar, track, and respond to incoming domestic and international subpoenas, levies, liens, garnishments, letters from counsel and other civil third-party requests.
  • Communicate with opposing counsel and various government agencies regarding outstanding requests with the assistance of attorneys and other members of the litigation team.
  • Provide operational support to maintain, evaluate, and, where needed, improve, Coinbase internal processes to respond to third party civil requests.
  • Assist with the processing and handling of executor and beneficiary requests in connection with Coinbase’s Death of Account Holder process.
  • Provide support to attorneys responding to incoming attorney demand letters and regulatory complaints.
  • Draft routine correspondence.
  • Support teams with other projects or tasks on an as-needed basis.

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 2-4 + years of relevant experience as a litigation paralegal, either at a leading national firm, or comparable in-house practice, ideally with exposure to high growth companies.
  • Experience sending and/or receiving a high volume of civil subpoenas, summons, levies, liens, garnishments, and other third-party requests on a daily basis.
  • Exceptional professional judgment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to execute under pressure and within tight timelines while juggling multiple projects.
  • Highest level of accuracy, superb attention to detail, and excellent proofreading skills.
  • Ability to process highly confidential data and maintain discretion.
  • A self-starter with enthusiasm, who can work independently with minimal oversight on certain projects but who is also a team player and can support on projects when needed.
  • Willingness to roll up sleeves (no job too big, no job too small).

Nice to haves:

  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar), Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Powerpoint, Excel), Docusign, and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.
  • Familiarity with Advologix, Jira, Asana, and Slack or other related software systems, as well as e-discovery platforms like Logikcull and Relativity.
  • Experience with technology companies (ideally Fintech) whether as clients while at a law firm or as an employer.
  • Experience with SQL.
