Summary
BLM is seeking a dynamic individual to join the team to serve as a Park Ranger in the Montana/Dakotas State Office, North Central District, Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument located in Fort Benton, Montana. - May require a one-year probationary period.
- Must be willing and able to carry and use bear repellant spray for protection from bears and other dangerous animals.
- Must be able and willing to drive long distances over rough gravel roads, operate utility task vehicles and travel over water by canoe and river boat.
- Must be able and willing to walk long distances over rough terrain carrying a backpack and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able and willing to camp and/or live in remote and primitive conditions, to include sleeping in a tent and preparing your own food, while doing fieldwork for up to 4 number of days per month.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or specialized experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.
FOR GS-7
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) as indicated by the following examples: 1) Developing and presenting a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducting walks, and giving demonstrations to a variety of audiences; 2) Developing or revising of interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, exhibits; 3) Operating a variety of audiovisual and other media used in connection with interpretive programs; 4) Conducting law enforcement or investigative work (park related); 5) Archaeological or historical preservation research work; Assisting in forestry or fire management work in park; or similar operations.

Education: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate level education from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to the work of the position to include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in this position.

Combination Specialized Experience and Education: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement.

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successful completion of all of the requirements for a bachelor's degree in a curriculum that is qualifying for this position as described above, from an accredited college or university, and meets one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement based on the following: (1) class standing (upper third standing in the graduating class of a college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses); (2) grade-point average (3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0) as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or (3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (Note: Transcripts must show a confer/completion date to meet this requirement).
Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
FOR GS-9
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) as indicated by the following examples: 1). Developing and presenting a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducting walks, and giving demonstrations to a variety of audiences; 2) Development or revision of interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, exhibits; 3) Operating a variety of audiovisual and other media used in connection with interpretive programs; 4) Conducting law enforcement or investigative work (park related); 5) Archaeological or historical preservation research work; Assisting in forestry or fire management work in park; or similar operations.

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary office work to field work. Field work may occur in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, snow covered, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. The work of the position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads; walking over rough terrain or inclines; paddling, rowing, or otherwise operating watercraft; standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching, and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, backpacking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work requires safe operation of 4x4 vehicles on unimproved roads and the physical stamina and ability to maintain and/or repair trails, trailheads, fencing, and other facilities in the field.
Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office and field environment. Field work may occur in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for up to two weeks in
duration. During the summer months, temperatures can be above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In winter, work may be required in temperatures at or below freezing.
