Job Description

This position will be hybrid out of the Springfield, IL office. It is not a remote position.

Horace Mann is hiring for a Payroll and Benefits Administrator. We are seeking a candidate with at least one year of payroll experience, proficient in Excel with excellent customer service experience.

Payroll 

  • Accurately coordinate and process multi-state payroll on a semi-monthly basis. 
  • Review and import hours from time and attendance system. 
  • Verify employee tax and direct deposit information, administering regulatory requirements, e.g., garnishments, tax levies, and support orders, and other adjustments to pay as necessary. 
  • Complete payroll data entry, time data, benefit prorations and employee status changes, including new hire and terminated employees. 
  • Prepare and issue manual checks as needed. 
  • Calculate and process payout for terminated employees in accordance with state requirements. 
  • Maintain payroll best practices to improve efficiency and consult with Total Rewards team to ensure process compliance. 

 Benefits 

  • Maintain benefits mailbox, ensuring employee inquiries, enrollment questions and plan changes are resolved. 
  • Manage benefits to include orientation, enrollment/termination and status changes, providing in-depth presentation and enrollment/guidance materials. 
  • Complete Health Savings Account (HSA) verifications and funding. 
  • Prepare monthly benefit invoices. 
  • Assist with annual open enrollment period, including preparation and distribution of materials, communication and arranging on-site representations. 
  • Coordinate with HR Services to manage disability claims and employee leave of absences. 

 Additional Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and run monthly, quarterly or annual reports as required. 
  • Assists with all governmental regulatory mandates and internal/external financial audits. 
  • Collaborates with HR Services and Compensation on Total Rewards projects as needed. 
  • Backup and support to Payroll Analyst and Benefits team as well as other Human Resource Partners 

Job Requirements:

  • 1+ years of payroll processing and benefit administration experience. 
  • Workday experience preferred. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office including basic Excel skills. 
  • Knowledge of payroll and state/federal tax laws. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Must possess a strong characteristic for attention to detail, accuracy, problem-solving and prioritization to meet critical deadlines.
