Job Description
Primary Responsibilities
Prepares, reviews and dispenses medication orders by interpreting physician orders and detecting therapeutic incompatibility and advising on interventions.
• Manage pharmacy operations, supervising staff, performing administrative duties, and buying and selling non-pharmaceutical merchandise.
• Assess the identity, strength and purity of medications.
• Teach pharmacy students serving as interns in preparation for their graduation or licensure.
• Provide educational information for other pharmacists, doctors, and/or nursing staff for the benefit of patients.
• Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability.
• Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage and proper medication storage.
• Analyze prescribing trends to monitor patient compliance and to prevent excessive usage or harmful interactions.
• Order and purchase pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, and drugs under supervision, maintaining stock and storing and handling it properly.
• Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, and registries of hazardous drugs, narcotics, and controlled drugs.
• Collaborate with other health care professionals to plan, monitor, review, and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of drugs and drug regiments, providing advice on drug applications and characteristics.
• Compound and dispense medications as prescribed by doctors and nursing staff, by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, or oversee these activities.
• Prepare sterile solutions and infusions for use in nursing homes, when IV certified.
• Plan, implement, and maintain procedures for mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals, according to policy and legal requirements, to ensure quality, security and proper disposal.
• All other duties as assigned.

• Indirect supervisor of pharmacy technicians when on duty.

Educational/Training Requirements
• Graduation from an accredited University with a B.S. in Pharmacy (R.Ph.) or a Doctorate of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.)
• Basic computer skills
Licensing Requirements
• Current Pharmacist License issued by Texas State Board of Pharmacy
• CE credits must be maintained according to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy guidelines
Experience Requirements
• IV certification preferred
