Position Details:
As part of the Summer Program Team within the ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center you will report to the Directors of the Summer Program. unpaid full-time internship designed to provide students and trainees with supervised hands-on learning experiences in children’s mental health. Interns participate in structured training observation and guided practice with children with ADHD ODD and related behavioral and learning challenges through structured movement and physical activity. All activities are educational in nature and licensed staff maintain responsibility for clinical services.
Physical Education Interns must be available in person at the following dates and times on-site at Allen Stevenson School and the Child Mind Institute NYC headquarters office.
Trainings 9am - 5pm EST on the following days:
- Monday June 22nd
- Tuesday June 23rd
- Wednesday June 24th
- Thursday June 25th
- Friday June 26th
- Monday June 29th
- Tuesday June 30th
- Wednesday July 1st
- Thursday July 2nd
Program:
- Daily 8am – 4pm EST
- Monday July 6th through Friday July 31st 2026
Learning Opportunities:
- Gain exposure to evidence-based behavioral treatment for ADHD and related social behavioral and emotional disorders in a group program model
- Observe licensed clinicians implementing treatment protocols for ADHD and related disorders both individually and in group settings.
- Implement foundational behavioral techniques with clients in a supervised educational setting
- Receive approximately 30 hours of structured training focused on ADHD and related disorders treatment principles and group adaptation
You Will:
- Attend and actively participate in all required training preparation and program sessions
- Engage fully in educational and training activities and demonstrate openness to feedback
- Apply skills learned in training during supervised program activities for educational purposes
- Assist in the development and implementation of structured sports movement and recess curriculum for children ages 5–10
- Lead age-appropriate physical activities and sports drills in the areas of soccer basketball and baseball that build motor skills coordination and confidence
- Promote teamwork sportsmanship and positive social interaction through cooperative play-based activities
- Facilitate pre-activity discussions focused on the rules and procedures that apply to the upcoming drills and games as well as post-activity discussions to summarize the events of the activity and to discuss any problems that occurred during the activity
- Collaborate with sport leads and program staff to plan activities manage transitions and adapt games as needed
- Demonstrate familiarity with popular children’s sports and playground games (e.g. baseball soccerGaga kickball)
You Have:
- Current undergraduat eor graduate-level study in physical education kinesiology exercise science education child development or a related field or equivalent experience in youth sports or recreation programs
- Experience working or volunteering with children or adolescents in a structured setting
- Ability to commit to all required training dates and the full duration of the Summer Program
- Passion for the Child Mind Institute's mission.
- Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle conflict and sensitive information with discretion.
- Professional demeanor with the ability to work collaboratively with families clinicians senior leadership and staff.
- Highly organized detail-oriented and proactive with the ability to manage tasks efficiently and adapt to patient needs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
