Summary

The Scientific Research (CL-SR) department is responsible for providing analytical services and conducting research to advance our understanding of artists’ materials and techniques, improve approaches to preserving works of art, and develop innovative scientific procedures and methodologies for the field.  The primary purpose of the Imaging Scientist position is to provide the services and research above.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1301-12. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, performing scientific analyses of works of art, using sampling and non-invasive methods. Must have correctable vision sufficient to accurately evaluate pigments and color in works of art. Requires good manual dexterity to work in a laboratory to operate instrumentation especially complex optical imaging sensors. Sufficient manual dexterity is required to safely handle works of art.

  1. Skill in conducting data analysis on works of art and conservation methods using imaging spectroscopy modalities.
  2. Knowledge of fine art and art history.
  3. Ability to train others in performance of job duties.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria:  Requires visual acuity sufficient to see small details in technical images of works of art.  Requires accurate color vision adequate to evaluate pigments and color in works of art and to use optical microscopy.  Requires a Bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences or at least 24 semester hours of post-secondary school courses in the physical sciences. Requires good manual dexterity to work in a laboratory to operate instrumentation especially complex optical imaging sensors. Sufficient manual dexterity is required to safely handle works of art.

 "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

  1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

                                                                                                                              or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
