Job Description

Summary of Major Responsibilities (Scope of Work)

The Pipeline Product Development Intern is responsible for assisting in performing experiments which are basic in scope for developing new products. The position is intended to be a full-time opportunity for a college student to obtain hands-on research experience in molecular biology and/or immunoassay development while contributing to Exact Sciences' initiatives toward establishing a liquid biopsy platform for launching new products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

include but are not limited to the following:
  • Conducts, records and analyzes bench level experiments within a specific product or technology area.
  • Effectively utilizes and applies established methods or technologies.
  • Communicates experimental results to supervisor or project team.
  • Operates scientific instrumentation related to performance of duties and notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
  • Prepares reports and documentation providing the analysis or summarization of project status and results.
  • Works with project team members on assignments to meet department and project objectives.
  • Reports to work on time and follows attendance guidelines.
  • Conducts all assigned job duties in a timely and productive manner.
  • Supports and complies with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Performs all job duties according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Supports and complies with the company's hazardous waste management program, including following safe, hazardous waste handling practices.

Mandatory Skills
  • Ability to accurately follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of laboratory terminology and equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to complete assignments in expected time frames.
  • Ability to learn and understand scientific concepts.
  • Basic analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of basic software applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); email - preferably Outlook.

Education and Experience:
  • Completion of a minimum of one year of college.
  • Preference given to candidates with a college focus in one of the Life Sciences and with prior laboratory experience.
  • Preference given to candidates with a record of outstanding academic achievement.

Desired Characteristics:
  • Disciplined and reliable; able to stay focused on a task and work independently; motivated to perform quality work; diligent about arriving to work on time and completing tasks that are assigned in a timely manner.
  • Able to respond to new information quickly.
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on quality output.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend and reach on a regular basis.
  • Ability to utilize lab equipment for up to 4 hours per day (includes pipetting, etc.).
  • Ability to use and wear safety protective gear/equipment (e.g. safety glasses, lab coat, gloves, etc.) and follow safety guidelines while in the lab, etc.
  • Ability to work at a laboratory bench or fume hood for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work with hazardous or flammable materials so as not to endanger oneself or others.
  • Ability to constantly move about to coordinate work and interact with co-workers.
