Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics is a rapidly expanding initiative with the objective of revolutionizing the retail landscape through robotics. Our development and implementation of the cutting-edge Alphabot® technology are currently underway, with deployment in stores across North America.

We’re seeking an Automation/Controls Engineer to help shape our state-of-the-art robotic inventory management system. The right candidate should have experience developing PLC software (Siemens - TIA Portal Simatic) for use in automation, packaging, or process industries.

You’ll be responsible for executing the controls strategy and programming automated systems, including programming of PLCs and/or robots. A strong electrical and controls background is required, along with a willingness to rapidly grow and develop new skills as needed. Our work is challenging, fun, and rewarding. WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON:

  • Design, simulation, debug, test, implementation, deployment, validation, documentation, and support of modular and scalable PLC ladder logic software, Human Machine Interface (HMI) programs, and the electro-mechanical system they control and with which they interface.
  • Communicate and work closely with members of other teams, such as electrical/controls engineers, systems engineers, mechanical engineers, software developers, network/IT engineers, etc., to develop a control strategy.
  • Help define, author, and improve code and processes to ensure efficiency, quality, reliability, and regulatory compliance if necessary. Help writing technical design documentation, such as functional specifications, safety specifications, V&V test plans, and reports.
  • Provide remote support to site personnel across the country as part of service for remote sites. Support provisioning/commissioning by troubleshooting software, electrical, sensors, network, actuators, etc.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

  • Experience developing PLC-based controls, plus: Siemens PLC software
  • BS/MS in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent
  • Ability to conceptualize ideas and design from blank page with supervision
  • Experience programming automated storage, picking, or retrieval systems is a plus
  • Ability to travel within the USA up to 5%, typically to customer sites
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal is preferred, but experience with other PLC platforms (e.g., Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Omron, GE, etc.) will also be considered.
  • Experience with SCADA such as Inductive Automation’s Ignition, but others also can be acceptable such as AB FactoryTalk, Wonderware, SIMATIC WinCC, etc. Experience with distributed IO, such as Pepperl+Fuchs ASI, but others can also be acceptable such as Allen Bradley Flex IO, Safety PLCs, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic networking devices, such as switches, routers, software tools, Profinet, IP, Modbus, etc. Experience or knowledge of object oriented languages, such as C, C++, C#, Java, VB, etc, Excel VBA scripting a plus.
  • Position is an on-site at Andover MA, five days a week role. Hands on. Desire to learn. Not afraid to work with subsystems interfacing with main control system, not just PLC and HMI. Team player and ability to work well with other teams, such as SQA, software, embedded, mechanical, electrical, systems, etc..
