This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Police Officers to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Pay is set using the 983S Special Salary Scale.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment.
- Incumbent must possess a valid State-issued driver's license and be able to obtain and maintain a government issued driver's license.
- This position requires a Secret Security Clearance.
- This position requires Firearms qualification testing.
- This position requires incumbent to submit to a pre-placement urinalysis and random urinalysis exams thereafter. Incumbent must also sign a DA Form 5019 drug testing position form.
- Incumbent must successfully complete pre-placement and annual physical examinations.
- Incumbent is required to wear a uniform that must be clean and possess a sharp and crisp appearance.
- This position is designated as a Mission Essential position.
- The position requires working rotating shifts including weekends and holidays and may require working overtime as well as on-call duty.
- The position requires certification in CPR techniques and knowledge of first aid.
- This position requires wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in case of chemical/hazardous emergency.
- This position requires Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN)/Washington Area Law Enforcement System (WALES) certification.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain Virginia certification in the operation of the Model 5000 Intoxilyzer Breathalyzer.
- Incumbent must meet the minimum standards IAW AR 190-56.
- This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain law enforcement certification.
- This position requires certification with various radar equipment.
- This position requires Army law enforcement certification or completion of the Department of the Army Civilian Police (DACP)/U.S. Army Military Police School (USAMPS) Law Enforcement Academy within 12 months of appointment.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing laws and regulations to maintain order and protect life and property; responding to calls for police assistance and emergency situations; coordinating with other law enforcement agencies and emergency services to render aid; arresting and mirandizing suspects; preserving evidence at crime scenes; conducting investigations of crimes and suspected criminal activities; conducting vehicle or foot patrols; writing accident reports; conducting field drug and alcohol testing of suspected offenders; operating radar speed detection devices; or conducting personal or vehicle searches.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
