We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Policy Analyst on our Publishing and Mission Operations team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 10 days a month in the office.
As a Policy Analyst you will provide expertise and support to the Director, Science and Drug Policyon issues related to substance use disorders and mental health. Responsible forsupporting policy and report development; monitoring and interpretingdevelopments in science and behavioral health that impact physicians, patients,and the health of the public. Collaborate on developing tools and educationalresources for physicians, providing scientific/technical support for the coreactivities of the AMA.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
AMA PolicyDevelopment, Research and Support
- Analyzes policy, data, and the scientific literature on key substance use and behavioral health related issues.
- Support the identification evidence-based resources for the prevention and treatment of substance misuse and behavioral health disorders and their potential impact on the health system and patient care.
- Support AMA Advocacy activities related to legislative and regulatory proposals in these areas.
- Consult the scientific literature and other research-based instruments in order to conduct evidence-based assessments and assist in developing peer-reviewed publications.
- Foster and maintain effective relations with external organizations, including government agencies, private organizations, and state and specialty medical societies.
- Support the AMA's Council on Science and Public Health, Board of Trustees, House of Delegates, and Senior Management by developing health policy reports and position statements
- Provide staff support at AMA House of Delegates meetings.
Programmatic Support
- Collaborate with other departments across the AMA to provide programmatic support where directed
- Provide advice and counsel to AMA members, staff, and the public on subjects related to substance use, harm reduction, and behavioral health that impact physician practice and the health and wellness of patients.
- Provide subject matter expertise to assist in the development of AMA tools, resources, and educational modules related to behavioral health
- Inform and support AMA programs that require a science and behavioral health focus to enhance physician knowledge and support public health.
May include other responsibilities as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in health policy, public health, or other relevant field required. Master's degree (MSW or MPH) preferred.
- Minimum of 3+ years' experience in behavioral health in a clinical or policy setting that enables the candidate to identify and address a broad range of clinical and/or health policy topics.
- Experience with and understanding of the scientific method and its applications in the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based policies and activities is expected
- Ability to conduct literature searches and science-based assessments and to write sound scientific reports on a wide variety of science and environmental health-based topics and issues is essential; previous publications a plus
- Effective planning and organizing skills are a necessity, along with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Demonstrated analytical, evaluative, and critical thinking skills, and the ability to work independently
- Ability to distill and aggregate information on environmental health to inform organizational prioritization and response
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to interface effectively with people of varying disciplines, background, and expertise and to work within a team environment
- Comfortable presenting in large group settings
- Some travel required
