Job Description

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

Mill is seeking a high-energy, fast-paced policy and business operations professional to help build out our public sector programs.

You are passionate about waste and sustainability issues. You will play a crucial role in overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations and programs related to state and municipal programs. Your primary responsibility will be to build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, industry stakeholders, and other key decision-makers. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless execution of public sector initiatives.

The preferred location for this role is Washington D.C., and frequent domestic travel is required (up to 1-2 times per month)

What you’ll do:

  • Assist with the creation of a waste prevention campaign centered around the use of the Mill service to reduce food waste, including the creation of model statutory and grant funding provisions and municipal marketing materials.
  • Establish and nurture a network of state and local government officials.
  • Design public sector programs that meet the needs and budgets of municipalities and Mill’s business objectives.
  • Identify and analyze relevant legislative and regulatory developments and procurement pathways that provide unique opportunities for a Mill partnership.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including legal, communications, and public affairs, to align public sector program objectives with overall company goals.
  • Manage and oversee the implementation of municipal programs, including project planning, operationalization, partner success, and reporting. Assist with creation of tools of engagement, including worksheets and calculators, that illustrate Mill-related benefits in terms of greenhouse gas/landfill methane emissions reductions, municipal food scraps diversion program cost savings, and household wasted food avoidance savings.
  • Represent the company at trade shows, conferences, and other events to promote our brand and engage with policymakers and other government officials. (This role will require frequent domestic travel.)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Political Science, Public Administration preferred, or a related field. A Master's degree would be a plus.
  • Proven experience (8+ years) in government affairs, public policy, government procurement, or related fields with a focus on operations and program management. Experience with public/private partnerships would be a major plus.
  • Experience in the sustainability, waste management, transportation, and/or utility sector. Outreach and engagement around food waste and loss would be a benefit.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a charismatic and persuasive presence when engaging with stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, promoting collaboration and consensus-building.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to attend events, meet with government officials and build relationships with partners.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $120k to $155k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs. At Mill, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
