Portfolio Insights Associate

You’ll be joining the Portfolio Insights (“PI”) team, focused on allowing companies and investors to communicate structured and unstructured information to one another. Ultimately, we’re answering the following question for our clients: “what did you do with my money?” We’re on a mission to create a more transparent private market. The PI offering has been in the market since 2018 and has nearly 100 paying clients, ranging from small funds to some of the largest investors in the world. This is an unsolved problem, and we have the expertise and bandwidth to solve it.

Our clients are private company investors such as venture funds and corporate venture arms, and you’ll be reporting directly to their controller, CFO, or General Partners. You’ll be the connecting tissue between our clients and will have direct communication with venture-backed CEOs and CFOs. The PI team is a startup within a startup. This is a very unique opportunity for someone who is looking to have a large breadth of knowledge and experience.

Private company information, from ownership to the quarterly performance of said private companies are unorganized and disparate. However, investors need to have to receive organized information on an ongoing basis. In this role, using process and technology, you will be able to help our clients such that:

• Interact with funds to understand their needs for data collection and what they require.
• Communicate this need to the portfolio companies and professionally pursue the collection process.
• Organize the data provided to Carta and import it to the Carta platform such that the funds can retrieve the information.
• Perform ad hoc services such that funds can make the best use of their Carta experience.

The career progression of this role includes any of the following:

• Sales and customer success, given the client-facing nature of the role,
• Valuations, given the level of familiarity required with financial statements and investor presentations,
• Product management, given the level of experience required to navigate the Carta platform.

If we can solve these problems, we will:

• Promote trust between investors and companies
• Increase venture investments in companies based on merit and performance, not based on useless handwaving
• Give investors a better lens to company performance so that they can provide guidance and assistance sooner (rather than post-mortem)
• Help investors understand the health of their investments

The final result of our efforts will be a new communication platform. On top of this network, we will build the financial products of the future: employee updates, primary financing, and lending.

Without this platform, private capital markets may stay stuck in the middle ages.

• Fluent in English - both written and verbal
• Undergraduate major or minor in accounting, business, finance, or economics.
• Intermediate understanding of Excel and Google Docs/Spreadsheets (Vlookups, Index, etc).
• Care deeply, genuinely, and passionately about client services and the role it plays in making a customer-centric company successful
• Comfortable learning quickly and taking on new challenges
• Ability to articulate both technical software issues as well as address equity/finance/accounting related questions in a clear and concise manner
• Highly organized with strong attention to detail
• Ability to establish and maintain relationships with power users
• Possess a helpful and professional attitude with excellent verbal and written skills
• Exhibit diplomacy, tact, and poise under pressure when working through customer issues as well as a strong sense of curiosity to solve problems
