Position Description

The Power Supply Supervisor will direct all Day-Ahead and Real-Time activities related to coordination of generation operations for Ameren Missouri. Duties will include:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide continuous operations interface with Ameren Missouri generation assets with regards to capability planning and scheduling coordination.
  • Communicate and coordinate daily operations with Ameren Missouri generation assets.
  • Monitor and know the maximum/minimum generation capabilities, ramp rates, equipment limitations, unit reliability issues, and other general status information for all Ameren Missouri generation assets.
  • Maintain communication paths to plant control rooms.
  • Monitor key equipment operational parameters and equipment status.
  • Provide continuous operations interface with MISO for current day and next day, and coordinate generation operations with MISO Regional Generation Dispatcher.
  • Collect and manage unit capability, derate, and outage information from each of the Ameren Missouri generation assets for preparation of generation offer data for submission to MISO.
  • Perform required position analyses and apply current strategies for development of generation offer packages.
  • Coordinate asset management decisions with Generation Coordinator and Traders regarding the timing of derates, outages, and reliability issues when asset management and conservative operations principals allow.
  • Review, maintain, and submit day-ahead generation offers to the MISO portal.
  • Maintain outage information in outage tracking tool, and communicate unit outages to MISO via unit offers and the CROW application. Review MISO must offer non-compliance reports, and take actions to mitigate instances of non-compliance.
  • Communicate MISO day-ahead generation and ancillary service awards to Ameren Missouri generation assets, Trading, Ameren Transmission Operations, and other Ameren groups who need this information. Review day-ahead awards to ensure MISO has properly allocated energy and ancillary services, and has optimized unit capabilities.
  • Coordinate with Optimization Specialist on analysis of past and current day strategies for maximizing the value of Ameren Missouri generation assets in the MISO market.
  • Ensure that all offer data and unit price parameters are within levels established by the Independent Market Monitor. Correct any offer parameters that are not in compliance with reference levels and report issues to Optimization Specialist.

Responsible for oversight and general coordination of generation operations within Asset Management & Trading, Ameren Transmission Operations, and Ameren Missouri Power Operations:

  • Monitor real-time dispatch of generation assets, and oversee Power Supply Coordinator operational decisions and communications. Ensure that Power Supply Coordinator is maintaining and updating real-time offer parameters to MISO, and is obtaining and managing overrides of unit offer parameters.
  • Ensure that generation assets are following MISO setpoint instructions, and monitor for Consecutive Interval Violations. Take action to prevent failure-to-follow-dispatch flags from being issued by MISO.
  • Be fully aware of market conditions at all Ameren Missouri generation nodes. Recognize when congestion is affecting the market, and take needed actions for real-time dispatch of Ameren Missouri generation assets.
  • Ensure that operation of units and management of data and information is in compliance with the MISO Tariff and NERC Reliability Standards.
  • Coordinate real-time asset management, unit commitment, and dispatch decisions with Real-Time Trader, Term Traders, and Generation Coordinator.
  • Perform Generation Coordinator duties during weekends, and assist Generation Coordinator with longer term asset management decisions.
  • Communicate with and inform the Transmission Operations Supervisor of all significant generation events, such as unit starts and stops, unit trips, unit derates and outages, status of voltage regulating equipment, etc.
  • Perform generation dispatch coordination in electric system emergency conditions and interface with MISO and Ameren Transmission Operations to mediate emergency conditions.

Other responsibilities

  • Comply with all department procedures, MISO Tariff, MISO business practice manuals, MISO procedures, and NERC Reliability Standards.
  • Maintain NERC Certification.
  • Maintain and update all required generation reports and distributions, including: Start/Stop sheet, Generation Survey, weekend update report, and monthly capacity reporting.
  • Respond to all Midwest ISO Contingency Reserve Deployments, and ensure that all alarms (visual and audible) are functioning each shift.
  • Complete the PSS Checklist each shift and ensure that all listed tasks are properly executed.
  • Perform PSS turnover between shifts.
  • Use E-Log to document all actions and communications

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or technology from an accredited college or university is required. Significant experience in power plant operations, power plant maintenance, generation dispatching, MISO Market operations, or transmission system operations in lieu of a degree will be considered. Seven or more years of experience in power plant operations, generation dispatching, MISO market operations, analysis, trading, and/or settlements is required. Detailed knowledge of the MISO markets is required.

In addition to the above qualifications, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

Ability to multi-task and manage high pressure situations. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as analytical, computer, and problem solving skills are required. Strong initiative and be highly motivated. Must be highly detail oriented, and simultaneously handle multiple projects. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word required. Proficiency with ProcessBook is required. This position requires an employee background check according to NERC guidelines. If applicant is not currently NERC System Operator Certified, applicant must pass NERC Certification test within six months of start date.

Additional Information

The Power Supply Supervisor position is staffed around the clock by personnel working a 12 hour rotating shift schedule. Ameren's selection process includes a series of interviews and may include an assessment process. Specific details will be provided to qualified candidates.
