Job Description

Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers for 60 miles at speeds of up to 150 mph while producing minimal noise.

Our sights are set high and our problems are hard, and we believe that diversity in the workplace is what makes us smarter, drives better insights, and will ultimately lift us all to success. We are dedicated to cultivating an equitable and inclusive environment that embraces our differences, and supports and celebrates all of our team members.

What You’ll Do

  • Responsible for assembling and developing an eVTOL powertrain simulation for use in an integrated simulation environment.
  • The simulation will include models of battery pack power and thermal conditions during discharge and charging, motor-inverter power draw and thermal conditions, modeling intermittent power draws from vehicle subsystems, supporting vehicle-level efficiency improvement and design optimization, and establishing conditions for system evaluation to drive design or performance prediction.
  • Liaise with the drive unit (motor, gearbox, inverter) and battery/BMS teams to build models of those systems at the appropriate fidelity for a multidisciplinary simulation environment
  • Lead the powertrain model validation effort
  • Support vehicle level trade studies involving the electric propulsion system
  • Support design and analysis activities to verify business and regulatory requirements will be met with high confidence

What You Need

  • BS in an Engineering discipline required. MS or PhD in an Engineering discipline highly desirable
  • 8+ years of multi-physics simulation experience, or 5+ years of experience with powertrain simulation
  • Expert in numerical modeling and dynamic simulation of complex systems
  • Experience modeling battery energy storage systems and/or electric propulsion systems
  • Proficient in at least one programming/scripting language (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or Julia)
  • Experience building surrogate models based on high fidelity disciplinary simulations
  • Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in a fast-paced design environment

Bonus Qualifications

  • Numerical Optimization experience
  • Familiar with 14 CFR Part 33 and RTCA DO-311A
Archer is proud to be an Equal Opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. All aspects of employment are decided on the basis of merit, qualifications, and business needs. We do not discriminate based upon race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
