Northern Trust is embarking on a multi-year investment strategy to modernize how we manufacture and publish portfolio accounting data enabling flexibility and choice in how data is consumed by our clients. This includes both our accounting and investment books of record (ABOR and IBOR). The modernization program (Impact Zone) aims to increase and enhance the data products we offer by building a robust accounting domain powered by real-time, event-driven valuation engine and cloud capabilities.

As we modernize our portfolio accounting and data platforms we aim to also transform our client service and operating model by leveraging AI and ML to enable automated data discovery and data quality validation.

We are seeking a highly experienced Financial Reporting industry professional to work in integrated collaboration with the Modernization Impact Zone and lead, oversee and set strategy for our Global Client Valuations Accounting and Reporting Practice.

The ideal candidate will have very strong understanding of financial reporting with particular emphasis on securities financial accounting, custody ABOR client and regulatory reporting or Asset Manager IBOR reporting. The individual will be responsible for managing and developing a team of professionals across multiple locations, developing and executing our portfolio accounting and valuation strategy and service model supporting some of the largest and most sophisticated Global Asset Owners/Managers and Family Offices around the world as well as our Wealth Management client base.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and guidance through senior managers for a team of 400+ employees across several international locations supporting client reporting valuations for our Global Asset Owner, Global Family office and Wealth custody client base.
  • Develops and executes long-term portfolio accounting and reporting strategy to achieve key business objectives; Sets strategy in line with company strategy and objectives.
  • Applies in-depth knowledge of own organization function as well as business and commercial expertise to differentiate the company from the competition
  • Evaluates key business challenges; directs the development of new or innovative solutions, including transformation & change initiatives that support business efficiency and effectiveness
  • Leads and manages the global client valuations and accounting practice ensuring that operations are efficient, effective, exceed client expectations and are industry best in class.
  • Develops and implements processes and systems to continuously improve the portfolio accounting, financial reporting, valuations and data management operations and reduce operational risk.
  • Works collaboratively with peers and stakeholders to oversees the development and implementation of technology solutions to support best in class portfolio accounting, reporting and data services platform while ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Provides expert guidance and support to internal and external stakeholders including clients and acts as a subject matter expert on portfolio accounting, financial reporting and regulatory reporting issues.
  • Liaises with Executive management for both internal and external stakeholders, develops and maintains relationships with industry participants and regulators
  • Shapes the opinions of, and negotiates with, other senior and executive leaders; establishes collaborative relationships across the business and with external organizations
  • Assumes full accountability for the performance and productivity of the function

The Ideal Candidate should demonstrate the following qualities:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in financial reporting and/or fund accounting or analytics operations with a strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, and regulatory requirements.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience with a leading custodian, asset service provider or an Accounting/Audit Firm in significant leadership role.
  • Prior experience managing at least 150 staff organization across multiple geographies
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Professional accounting designation such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), or Chartered Accountant (CA) is preferred.
  • Extensive experience and strong understanding of financial accounting/tax and securities valuations acquired through practical experience in portfolio accounting, fund accounting, financial reporting or Audit roles including technical and supervisory roles.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in financial reporting software, accounting, data and analytics systems, and other relevant technology tools.
  • Excellent leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team of professionals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and implement solutions to complex operational challenges.
  • Prior experience managing multi-million dollar budgets
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal and written
  • Demonstrated experience leading large change management & turnaround or transformational programs
  • Proven experience developing and implementing business strategies for key business initiatives
  • Demonstrated business development and client service experience
