Job Description:

Carrier is a leading provider of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, building controls and automation, and fire and security systems leading to safer, smarter, sustainable, and high-performance buildings. As Carrier emerges as an independent, standalone company, the Carrier Global Engineering organization is transforming. This new multi-site organization will ensure Carrier's lead position in the market through investments in advanced research, technologies, and methods that will shape the future of our products.

Willis Carrier invented the first modern air-conditioning system in 1902 and changed how people live, work, and play. Today, Carrier needs your talent to build upon this legacy and deliver what's next for the modern world.

The Controls group within the Systems & Controls Center of Excellence (Carrier WHQ) has responsibility for developing and deploying model-based methods and tools for control of Carrier products. This includes using mathematical models for assessing control architecture and using models for design as well as verification of control designs in various models in the loop environments. The core technology areas of the Controls group are control-oriented modeling, control architecture selection, control design, and verification. The group works in teams that include mechanical design and uses systems engineering methods to capture requirements and both carry out validation studies as well as verification in model environments as well as laboratory settings. Of particular interest is to build capability in machine learning applications for both control functionality as well as diagnostics. The group also develops and maintains computational tools for deployment to Carrier product teams. Engineers in the group work on global projects in conjunction with Carrier business units and renowned external research organizations (universities and research institutes) to create worldwide business impact through new product and process innovations.

Position Summary:

The candidate will provide technical leadership in the area of control design and implementation of thermofluid systems.

The candidate will engage with global product teams to solicit business needs and convert those into control design requirements and overall workflows, methods, and tools that can radically impact how Carrier controls are designed, deployed, and operated to provide product differentiation. Key targets include improving engineering effectiveness as well as developing disruptive innovative methods for model-based control design and implementation of Carrier systems. The candidate will take an active part in product development products to support design engineers in adopting and using new methods and tools, which will also include developing and delivering training in computational control methods and tools. The candidate will also work closely with other teams in the Systems & Controls COE, including teams responsible for model development (to drive the development of optimization methods).

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership in the application of control systems engineering at Carrier. Lead the creation of Standard Work, Best Practices, and workflows to be used across Carrier's product lines.
  • Deployment. Ensure that methods and tools developed in the group impact the Carrier business through engagement in global product projects,
  • Methods, tools, and algorithms. Ensure those appropriate control methods, tools and algorithms are deployed to match the needs of the Carrier business, including contributing to the architecture, development, testing, and documentation of the tools developed in the group.
  • Modeling for controls. Support that mathematical models for thermofluid systems are built based on principles and best practices that secures reliable application of control design methods and verification.
  • Talent. Support development of staff within Carrier product teams and the Controls group, mentor control systems engineers.

Experience / Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to capture engineering design problems as control problems, including attention to control architecture and to online learning methods including reinforcement learning.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in the theory, algorithms, methods, and tools for control engineering.
  • Expertise and experience with modeling principles and best practices of thermofluid systems, such as vapor compression cycles or power plants.
  • Expertise and experience with the development of computational tools in Python and Jupyter notebooks. Knowledge about other languages such as Julia, C/C++, R, Java, and FORTRAN is a merit, as skill in DevOps practices.
  • Experience with using HPC and cloud-based platforms for computation at scale with e.g., Azure, AWS, or Google's respective offerings. Experience with Docker and JupyterHub as well as tools and methods for parallelization is merit.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and an entrepreneurial attitude towards technological innovation in a global environment.
  • Self-starter who is well-organized in an international team environment, and has excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.

Education:

MEng or Ph.D. in a relevant Engineering discipline (e.g., applied mathematics, mechanical or chemical engineering) with 10+ years of experience.
