The Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Office is a support component within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen established the CWMD Office in December 2017 by consolidating primarily the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) and a majority of the Office of Health Affairs (OHA), as well as other DHS elements. The establishment of the CWMD Office elevates and streamlines the Department’s efforts against the rising WMD threat. CWMD’s mission is to counter attempts by terrorists or other threat actors to carry out an attack against the United States or its interests using a weapon of mass destruction (biological, chemical, nuclear, or radiological).
