Job Description

As a Principal Cloud Engineer on the DIRECTV API Platform, you will be part of a team using some of the most cutting edge, cloud-native technologies to deliver a world-class platform for running all the back-end applications behind the best television video streaming product on the market. This team designs, builds, and operates a collection of open-source systems and in-house software components centered around containers, Kubernetes, Apigee and public cloud technologies. We focus on improving performance, increasing automation, and improving developer workflows for product development. Every member of this team will have the chance to influence the design and the tools used that make up this platform.
We are looking for self-motivated, highly experienced individuals with a passion for Kubernetes, Apigee, cloud services, and software engineering to take on the role of a Principal, Platform Engineer 2. The role is best suited for those with 6-7 years of experience in Kubernetes, high-level programming languages (java, python, go, ...), a high degree of understanding of Linux and its subsystems, and 6-7 years of experience with public cloud services (AWS). This position is fully remote and favors those who can demonstrate their ability to lead large projects autonomously.

  • 6-7 years of experience executing Apigee operations, including provisioning, upgrading, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • 6-7 years of experience executing Kubernetes operations, including provisioning, upgrading, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Evaluating 3rd party system tools that integrate with our Kubernetes platform and developing the operational process and automation to deploy these tools. This can include tools like image registries, security tools, automation frameworks, etc.
  • Evaluating cloud services and determining their value to our platform and developing the operational processes and automation to integrate with these services.
  • Design, develop, and support software that integrate various systems, automate operations, and improve developer workflows.
  • Collaboration with internal and external teams on design, architecture, code-reviews, and process reviews.
  • Continuously evaluate various parts of the platform for opportunities for security hardening and improvements in observability.
  • Evaluate new technologies and industry trends, develop proof-of-concepts, and present findings to the engineering organization.
  • Communication with developers and users of our platform to understand pain points, bottlenecks, and desired features to continuously improve the platform.

Here's what you'll need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field, preferred.
  • 6-7 years of extensive experience operating and/or maintaining Apigee clusters.
  • 6-7 years of extensive experience operating and/or maintaining Kubernetes clusters.
  • 8-10 years of extensive experience administering and troubleshooting Linux systems.
  • Extensive experience in developing shell scripts.
  • Experience with using and provisioning public cloud services (AWS, GCE, Azure).
  • Thorough understanding of networking and DNS.
  • Thorough understanding of the HTTP protocol and REST APIs.
  • Software development experience using a high-level, object-oriented programming language (Java, C++, Python, Golang) is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Possess an "everything has a solution" mentality and fearless "go-getter" attitude.

DIRECTV's compensation structure is designed to be market-competitive and fully supports efforts to attract and retain employees. It is the company's policy to offer pay that is competitive with other employers in the local market. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
The Base Salary range displayed below reflects the minimum and maximum target salary for each of DIRECTV's 4 (four) US Labor Market Zones. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Mid (N2): $134,700 - $202,100
High (N3): $148,170 - $222,310
Top (N4): $154,905 - $232,415
