Principal Data Engineer
Job Description
The Principal Data Engineer is responsible for leading large technical initiatives on complex solutions at WellSky, providing technical leadership, insights, and motivation to a team of highly skilled developers, and owning deliverable results in a critical area of development while providing reliable, efficient, high-quality software and hardware solutions. This role impacts architecture and process improvements across multiple product lines within a business unit.
A day in the life! 
You will be responsible for the following:
- Overseeing the performance, integrity, and security of the organization’s database systemsÂ
- Developing and maintaining documentation of the data architecture, data flows and data models.
- Designing and implementing database solutions, managing database environments, and providing strategic guidance to ensure optimal database performance and reliabilityÂ
- Driving key technical and design discussions with technical leads across the engineering organization and in coordination with WellSky’s many business units.
- Leading database-related projects, including migrations, upgrades, and deploymentsÂ
- Monitoring and optimizing database performance, including query tuning and resource management. Implementing and managing database performance tools and technologiesÂ
- Ensuring database security through proper access controls, encryption, and auditing. Implementing and managing data backup and recovery strategies to protect against data lossÂ
- Championing new techniques and influencing engineering standards across the organizationÂ
- Collaborating with technical program management to ensure timely delivery and successful implementation of database solutions aligned with business outcomes. Leading database-related projects, including migrations, upgrades, and deploymentsÂ
- Making sound technical decisions, influencing priorities, and coming up with tradeoffs that maps to short-term and long-term goals and objectivesÂ
- Providing advanced troubleshooting for database issues and resolving complex problems. Serving as a point of escalation for database-related incidents and issuesÂ
- Mentoring and leading other DBAs, providing guidance and support for their professional developmentÂ
- Continuously improving upon existing processes and solutionsÂ
- Creating technical product vision for projects across a global teamÂ
Do you have what it takes?
Required Experience: 
- Bachelor's degree in a related fieldÂ
- 12-15 years related work experienceÂ
- Database performance tuning, backup/recovery, and security practicesÂ
Do you stand above the rest?
Preferred Experience:
- Healthcare industry experienceÂ
- Microsoft SQL ServerÂ
- PostgreSQLÂ
- Cloud database solutions (e.g., Cloud SQL, AlloyDB)Â
- Familiarity with GCPÂ
