Principal Engineer

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership for our teams that work on our data ingestion platform. These systems ensure that our data is reliably captured and stored in our Data Lake, and includes support and development of operations tools to refine data ahead of its presentation to clients.

In this role, you will:

• Maintain the technical health of our teams’ systems and identify/advocate for improvements.
• Collaborate with project leads to make sure technical complexities of upcoming work are accounted for in plans.
• Lead technical design and refinement sessions with teams. This includes, but is not limited to: being prepared on topics in advance; verifying assumptions; suggesting different approaches; being vocal; consolidating consensus; being open-minded; making sure teams are decisive.
• Support other Senior Engineers and Team Leads in assessing technical approaches and working to improve the overall quality of teams’ work.
• Collaborate with peers on other teams to outline general and technology-specific best practices and standards.  Help to educate the rest of the team about the agreed-upon standards.
• Take responsibility for the effectiveness of our teams’ quality procedures (e.g. code reviews, test suites).
• Proactively take steps to understand the architecture of systems that interface with and power your team’s solutions.
• Collaborate with project leads and managers to assess the overall skillset and health of the team.

What We’re Looking For:

• 5+ years as a software engineering professional
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Well-versed in web technology and applications, ideally full-stack leaning back-end
• Confidence working with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure)
• Experience contributing to enterprise technology program or collaborating with colleagues to define technical direction and vision
• Strong affinity for mentorship and coaching
• Familiarity working within an agile environment

This role has the option of sitting in our US headquarters office in Chicago or working remotely in the United States (in all states aside from Delaware, Iowa, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia) as long as the individual has eligible working rights in the US. Interviews and onboarding are currently being conducted virtually.
