About the team and position:

Carvana’s Marketplace team is at the heart of our mission to change the way people buy cars. We are responsible for business-to-business systems and software that empower ADESA auto auctions to produce, list, and sell effectively.

We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer to join us in creating innovative solutions for our customers and internal users. This role involves defining and helping lead technical strategy around the customer experience on our new digital auction website, along with creating secure and robust systems for our 1200+ internal auction employees.  This is accomplished through building highly available, distributed, and reliable services.

What you’ll be doing...

  • Design, develop, maintain, and deploy complex back-end solutions using C# / dotNetCore (GraphQL and RESTful server-side via Web API) stacks and cloud services (Azure: functions, Service Bus, etc.)
  • Work with cloud systems, pipelines, and resources
  • Perform data storage and persistence containers querying using SQL, NoSQL, and caching technologies
  • Develop loosely coupled solutions that are scalable, testable, modularized, and reusable
  • Work in a team environment using Kanban project approaches
  • Learn and try new technologies, approaches, and participate in bringing software engineering in Carvana to the next level

Skills and experience...

  • Minimum 10 years of software development, with consistently advancing skills and responsibilities
  • Deep understanding of dotNetCore and C#
  • Proven track record and passion for learning new programming languages
  • Expertise in working with data storage (SQL or NoSQL)
  • Experience in writing unit tests
  • Experience in debugging and troubleshooting web services, API, and libraries
  • Exposure to automated release pipelines with experience in Azure DevOps
  • Good communication and collaboration skills - Carvana developers work very closely with strong supporting teams and require great interpersonal skills including a positive attitude and sense of humor

Bonus Skills (helpful but not required)...

  • Experience in contemporary JavaScript / TypeScript (ES2015+), React Hooks, Next.js, Nx
  • Experience in using any cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP, RedHat, etc.)
  • Experience in CosmosDB or other NoSQL databases
  • Experience in using any message queue, such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
  • Experience in writing GraphQL interfaced services
  • Experience in working with NoSQL databases
  • Experience in working with authentication and authorization
