The Opportunity:
We recently crossed the threshold of 100 engineers, and are setting up a tech leadership track to enable us to grow further. By being one of the first Principal Engineers, youâll shape the role itself and the tech leadership culture together with the Director of Tech Leadership, who youâll report to.
As the Principal Engineer - Reliability, youâll work on challenging technical problems of an ambitious product. Depending on the time of the day, we process more than $1m revenue per hour. Every minute of downtime is costly for our customers, and our best features are useless if our services are not up. Youâll help new and existing product teams to detect incidents before our customers do, respond to them effectively, and most importantly learn and improve from every incident.
Please note that for this role, we can currently offer full-remote work for candidates based in the European Union and in the United Kingdom.
Your Mission:
- Owning the Incident Response process including OnCall rotations and Post Mortems
- Enable (new) teams to run stable services by responding to incidents quickly and learning from them
- Consult on SLAs, work with teams to create SLOs and collect SLIs
- Drive the preparation for significant events like Black Friday or major customer go-lives
- Setup processes for collaboration with support and customer success for tenant-specific issues
- Identify learning needs/skills gaps, and facilitate related technology knowledge sharing across the organization with the help of our internal knowledge team
- You will kickstart improvements affecting multiple teams related to the incident response or alerting and monitoring, as well as taking on ideas of othersÂ
- Lead communication within the organization on long running initiatives to improve the incident response, and make sure they get adopted successfully
- Closely collaborate with Head Of Product Management, Head of Engineering and Staff Engineers
- You evolve our tech vision and promote it within the company
What you need to succeed:
- A strong technical background and a proven track record in SRE, DevOps or Ops roles (5+ years)
- Experience evolving an on-call and incident process in a leadership role (2+ years)
- Experience taking on the Incident Commander role
- Experience running Post Mortems
- Ability to analyze tech issues and related organizational issues
- Project management, especially for projects affecting multiple teams
- Setting up trainings / on-boardings and running them
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Lives up to commercetoolsâ defined leadership principles and valuesÂ
- Great self-assessment mastery
- Experience working within an Agile environment with focus on the customer view
- Mentality to share and the aspiration to constantly improve yourself and learn about leadership, new technologies and concepts
- Fluent English to work in an international environment
- General experience within the e-commerce space (nice to have)
