About the Position

Reporting to the VP/Head of Innovation of SmarBear Innovation Labs, the Principal Engineer will work on incubating new product ideas to determine technical viability in areas that can help SmartBear create the next generation of developer tools to help them confidently accelerate their software deliverables. The mission of the SmartBear Innovation Labs is to Incubate and deliver on new product ideas to expand SmartBear’s leadership and innovation in Dev Lead Quality and DevSecOps. They will be responsible for working alongside the leader and the team,  in identifying new opportunities, assessing, and prioritizing the strategic fit and potential of these ideas, incubating a subset to test commercial and technological viability, and developing a few into products, with a strong focus on developers, self-service and product led growth. They will be responsible for working with the Innovation Labs team in defining and creating the process including the stages that constitute the innovation journey from ideation to delivering commercial products. They will also be responsible for working with a team of engineers, data scientists and UX researchers in the pursuit of innovation efforts.

Qualifications:

• Proven experience in ideation and exploring new products ideas, and ability to determine viability in short periods of time
• Ability to convert product ideas that have technical and commercial viability in accelerated time frames
• Strong experience with developing and delivering commercial enterprise grade software
• Strong and diverse technological acumen, and experience/knowledge of various types of applications and technology stacks as they pertain to UI, API, Mobile, Infrastructure as Code, Data consumption @ Scale, AI/ML based models
• Deep understanding of algorithms, coding, programming practices and languages including hands-on ability with one or more modern technology stacks
• Excellent understanding of architectural and design patterns
• Strong experience with middleware stacks, Sql and NoSql databases, and data modeling
• Expertise with building SaaS (public, private and on-prem), cloud native applications and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) Extensive knowledge of the software development process and corresponding technologies
• Experience in building open source projects and working on tooling for developers
• Strong soft skills, including attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication
• Proven ability to work with teams, and in a collaborative environment
• Strong technical leadership skills
• BS/BA required (preferably with a focus on technology)
