Position Purpose

The primary function of the Principal Java Engineer will be to take ownership of the development and operation of SmarterTravel’s media content and customer relationship management (CRM) systems as part of a growing team of engineers. This will entail building familiarity with a mature ecosystem of Java/Spring/Boot-based microservices. Responsibilities will include hands-on development and coding, ensuring smooth day-to-day operation, refining and improving operational processes, and mentoring junior developers.

Role & Responsibility

• Maintain and develop high performance and scalable features for the content websites and email sending platform. 
• Support the legacy content sites’ systems and collaborate with DevOps/Infrastructure engineers on problem solving, proposing and implementing architecture improvements
• Participate in day-to-day operations and troubleshooting, and suggest improvements to operational procedures
• Take ownership of the full technology stack:  Java microservices, Jenkins-heavy CI/CD, operational platform on Rundeck, and cloud infrastructure on AWS    
• Implement well-defined features with good test coverage and peer reviews.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and other engineers to plan, build, iterate, and ship new features to advance SmarterTravel in line with overall business objectives.
• Build strong relationships with stakeholders and establish a firm understanding of the business objectives driving development efforts
• Proactively and consistently communicate with stakeholders.
• Strike a balance between pragmatic, timely short-term solutions and technical debt avoidance

Education/Experience

• Java experience required, Spring / Boot desired
• Understanding of modern microservices infrastructure
• Wordpress experience helpful
• Experience with Jenkins and/or Rundeck helpful
• 4-6 years experience as a software engineer
• Bachelor’s degree in software engineering or related field - or equivalent work experience
