The Role
The Platform pillar is tasked with building, delivering, and maintaining the technology platforms that Cedar builds its business on. We are experts on scaling systems, architecting reliable infrastructure, and the underlying technologies our products run on; We are looking for a thoughtful and experienced Principal Site Reliability Engineer to join our team and level up this core function! They will be responsible for leading hands-on work across our entire product suite, including:
  • Driving new technology adoption for the rest of Cedar through greenfield development in the newest parts of Cedar's stack.
  • Collaborating with multiple teams of hardworking engineers, product managers, product designers, and data scientists, sharing ideas to promote Platform standard processes and share golden patterns.
  • Leading the development of multiple high-impact projects at once as a key code contributor and domain authority, delegating work, and owning outcomes.
  • Mentoring engineers at a variety of levels. Be a role model and trusted advisor for hardworking and driven team members.
  • Owning high-impact architecture changes and projects spanning multiple teams as a technical leader.
  • Driving org-level changes to improve existing processes, infrastructure, architecture, business problems, developer happiness, etc. Think broadly about opportunities to level up the engineering org.

In addition, the Principal Engineer will partner with the Chief Architect and Engineering leads to evolve core long-term technical strategy. This individual will work closely with other specialists across the organization as well as Product so excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative mentality are critical. This is a technical leadership position that does not include people management.
Responsibilities
  • Leadership of infrastructure architecture responsibilities for at least one product line.
  • Continuously evolve the Cedar infrastructure stack to improve efficiency, reliability, and security.
  • Partner with Technical Leadership to appropriately prioritize long-term technical investments and ensure those are factored into Engineering planning.
  • Maintain a broad and deep knowledge base of our entire platform.
  • Work across Software Engineering teams to share findings, drive standard methodologies and call out major issues.
  • Work with technologists to ensure technical issues within the Cedar platform are resolved quickly and with the highest quality solutions.
  • Maintain a culture that adheres to Cedar's values of focusing on our vision, using good judgment, staying positive, and preventing mediocrity.

Skills & Experience
  • 15+ years of professional platform engineering experience
  • Can take a system from 1 -> 10 -> 1000s and knows the appropriate steps along the way.
  • Has technically led systems through their full lifecycle development; from inception through growth and sustain (ideally also to sunset).
  • Platform engineering enthusiast.
  • Proven ability to operate and manage thousands of systems with a small team using automation and inventive tooling.
  • Experience with AWS, Python, Containers and Postgres.
  • Skilled with Terraform, CloudFormation or other infrastructure management frameworks.
  • Ability to produce high-quality diagrams and documentation for systems being designed.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Demonstrated capability managing costs for a large-scale internet application.
  • Passionate about Cedar's mission of improving the healthcare financial experience
