Principal Software Engineer, Commerce Systems
Job Description
Flexport is building the first modern logistics platform to make global trade easier for everyone. We are solving complex problems on a global scale, and disrupting a multi-trillion dollar industry that has remained stubbornly unchanged.
Commerce Systems Engineering:At Flexport, we’re passionate about making global trade easy for everyone. In a world where the global supply chain and logistics industry hasn’t yet seen game-changing technological innovation, our Commerce Systems team is leading the way. We’re dedicated to making the exploration and purchase of freight and freight related services easy. We strive to define and price the logistics products available on global trade lanes, from Ocean, Air, Trucking and Rail to digital products like freight visibility, customs, and insurance. We then enable customers to buy these integrated solutions via a travel commerce experience, providing transparency in the detailed pricing, transit time and carbon emissions. Post transaction, we enable the orchestration between the many execution systems required to deliver or track a shipment from factory to door. Â
We are searching for a talented Principal Software Engineer to join us in designing and scaling our order processing and orchestration system. This individual must bring clarity to complex problems by partnering with business and engineering leaders to develop solutions to even the most challenging issues. They are able to work across many product lines to generalize a complex problem into a platform, empowering the product lines to grow. They inspire us by modeling an ambiguous domain with clearly defined services and charting the course for key technical systems. They set the standard for engineering excellence and fiercely advocate for it. They are hands on and enjoy building systems. Above all, they are passionate about growing and nurturing the engineering community by serving as mentors and coaches, fostering shared technical understanding and principles to drive growth and development for all engineers.
As the Principal Software Engineer, You will have the opportunity to:- Lead the design, development, and deployment of large-scale software systems
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to other software engineers
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to define and deliver software solutions that meet business objectives
- Act as a technical subject matter expert for the development team and organization
- Champion best practices in operational excellence
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends and apply them to software development efforts where appropriate
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
- A minimum of 15+ years of experience in software development
- Proven experience leading the design, development, and deployment of large-scale, complex software systems
- Experience in B2B, Logistics, and/or Commerce systems
- Strong, full stack technical expertise in multiple programming languages and technologies
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
- Experience and passion for mentoring and providing technical guidance to other software engineers
- Experience with software development processes and best practices, including Agile and CI/CD
- Knowledge of emerging technologies and industry trends
- Experience working with large, complex data sets (preferred)
- Experience with Ruby on Rails (preferred)
- Proven success evolving complex architecture from monolithic to service-oriented (preferred)Â
Our continuous releases are integrated with Buildkite and Github. On the frontend, we create our views with React + Next.js, manage the flow of data with GraphQL/Relay, and test our application with Jest. On the backend, we’re in the process of decoupling our monolithic Rails app into a Services architecture, primarily on JVM languages (Java and Kotlin). Our data is persisted in the right store for the job, typically Postgresql or MongoDB. Our stack is hosted on AWS using Kubernetes.Â
