Principal Software Engineer - Compiler
Job Description
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
Â
We are looking for a quantum circuit synthesis and optimization scientist. As a quantum circuit specialist, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.Â
Your main task will be the development, conceptualization, and eventual implementation of new software for quantum computing and especially compilation of quantum circuits. Our focus on interdisciplinary partnerships and networks will enable you to meet many interesting people (at places all over the world) and present your work at top-notch conferences and journals in our domain. We’re looking for someone creative, passionate about research, driven by curiosity, and able to think outside-of-the-box.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement algorithms for synthesizing quantum circuits from high-level quantum algorithms or quantum programs, validated through extensive numerical simulations and confirmed by analytical results
- Research data structures (IRs, intermediate representations,) to efficiently handle and manipulate circuits
- Develop mapping strategies to satisfy interaction properties on ion trap quantum computers
- Optimize quantum circuits to reduce gate counts, improve fidelity, and minimize errors
- Optimizing circuits taking error models of actual hardware into account
- Work closely with quantum hardware teams to understand hardware-specific constraints and nuances to ensure circuits are tailored for best performance
- Collaborate with software teams to integrate circuit synthesis and optimization tools into the company's quantum software platform
- Stay updated with the latest developments in quantum algorithms, quantum circuit synthesis, and optimization techniques
- Contribute to academic and industry conferences, publish research papers, and represent IonQ in the global quantum research community
You’d be a good fit with:
- 5-10 years of experience and publications directly related to the job responsibilities
- Demonstrated experience in quantum algorithm design, quantum circuit synthesis, and quantum circuit optimization
- Familiarity with classical optimization techniques and their application to quantum circuits
- Familiarity with quantum programming languages and frameworks like Qiskit, Cirq, or similar
- Programming experience, for prototyping in Python or other programming languages
- Experience with noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment
- PhD in Computer Science
You’d be a great fit with:
- >10 years of experience and track record of peer-reviewed publications directly related to the job responsibilities
- Leader in quantum algorithm design, quantum circuit synthesis, and quantum circuit optimization
- Experience with classical optimization techniques and their application to quantum circuits, and the LLVM compiler and its MLIR and QIR projects
- Proficiency with quantum programming languages and frameworks like Qiskit, Cirq, or similar
- Strong programming skills in Python, C++, or Rust
- Experience with noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices and quantum error correction (QEC)
- Excellent internal and external (customer, scientific and business conferences) communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment
- PhD in Computer Science or Quantum Information Science, and undergraduate/graduate degrees in Mathematics and/or Physics
Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We have also recently announced our new manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle and Toronto metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.
Â
