Principal Software Engineer, Storage & Compute

Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. Daily activities and responsibilities:

• Develop a strategic vision for Waymo compute & storage infrastructure that informs simulation, evaluation and training of Waymo Driver.
• Work with and influence partners across Waymo (Simulation, Planner, Behavior, Perception and ML Infra) to build joint roadmaps.
• Lead a multi-year technical roadmaps, balancing short and long-term technology investments.
• Review technical designs from the team and guide technical discussions.
• Uphold a culture of innovation, respect, and inclusion.

At a minimum we'd like you to have:

• 15 years of professional software engineering experience
• Experience with technical innovation
• Experience building distributed systems

It's preferred if you have one or more of:

• Experience driving collaboration across organizational boundaries, building multi-dimensional relationships, and importing and exporting ideas to achieve broad organizational goals.
• Understand the complex relationship between our organization and its environment, identify connections, adopt different perspectives, and quickly respond to changing circumstances in a strategic way.
• Cultivate ideas across organizational boundaries that create strategic opportunities.
• Experience building scalable, resilient, and observable distributed systems
