About Weather Verification Services and Reactor

Our Weather Verification Services (WVS) group provides industry-leading weather forensic data for a wide number of industries. We combine scientific engineering, cloud computing, and massive troves of meteorological data to provide answers for our clients when they need them most.

With data that is widely recognized as the most accurate for identifying the location and magnitude of severe weather events, our proprietary web-based GIS tool, Reactor, is utilized by insurance and mortgage industry experts to streamline catastrophe response efforts. This team is tasked with continuing to maintain and increase our lead on the competition by continuing to innovate APIs and data processing strategies that strengthen our integrations with and utility to clients. Make no mistake, your contributions to this team have a direct and positive impact on the ability for homeowners to quickly be made whole, and for communities to rebuild after disasters.

About the Career

The Principal Meteorological Software Engineer for the Weather Verification Services team will be directly responsible for engineering the data ingest, processing, and delivery pipelines that we rely upon for producing state-of-the-art current, consistent, and connected proprietary meteorological data for our clients.

You will work within a team to ensure 24x7 operational excellence of our algorithms, operationalize new meteorological algorithms and the necessary data acquisition processes, and develop new techniques to derive spatial analytics from the meteorological and hazard data sets available to our team.

A successful Principal Meteorological Software Engineer has a passion for weather, is extremely well-versed in development and infrastructure practices of the meteorological industry, and exhibits extreme ownership of the data products that they are working to deliver. They should be comfortable working side by side with Business Product Managers, Science and Analytics, User Experience, Development teams to support both operational and experimental efforts within the organization. We look for people that are not afraid to identify what we are doing wrong so we can fix it, and what we are doing right so we can improve on it. What you'll do:
  • Assists in management of 24x7 operations of critical computing systems and inbound/outbound data streams.
  • Maintain the continuity, integrity, and security of data assets.
  • Coordinate with Science and Analytics team members on R&D activities and algorithm improvements.
  • Responsible for making operational and maintaining proprietary algorithms and data processes.

About the Location

The COVID-19 crisis has impacted us all in one way or another. Our teams have adjusted from our tried-and-true 100% co-located team approach to our flexible working model utilizing the latest remote collaboration tools two days a week. On the other three days, you will be immersed in a team environment focused on intense collaboration and engaging discussions with peers.

Job Qualifications:

How you Qualify
  • Bachelor of Science (or higher) degree in Meteorology or Computer Science (or related field) or more than 10 years of relevant experience in computer operations and systems / data administration.
  • Strong background in meteorological data interpretation and analysis
  • Advanced understanding of high-availability computing environments
  • More than 10 years of experience with and an advanced understanding of meteorological data and data systems, specifically:
    • Experience working with data formatted in binary, ASCII, GRIB, NetCDF, HDF, etc
    • Experience with common meteorological data distribution systems/tools such as IRADS, NOAAPort, LDM
    • Experience with Geospatial tools such as GDAL, ArcPy, etc.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux
  • Strong scripting skills (bash, perl, python)
  • Advanced understanding of geospatial/georeferenced datasets
  • Must be well organized and have the ability to effectively multi-task and work independently

Nice to Haves
  • Preference given to candidates with working knowledge of big data tools such as Cassandra, Hadoop. Plotly, Storm, BigQuery, etc.
  • Preference given to candidates with experience engineering and deploying solutions on Google Cloud Platform or other similar cloud environments.
  • ElasticSearch, Jenkins, Big Query, CockroachDB, Docker, Apache Air Flow
  • Experience in designing and implementing large-scale event-driven architectures
Annual Pay Range:
130,000 - 160,000 USD
