Principle of Product Design

Merlyn Mind is a "Remote First" VC-backed AI EdTech startup that brings the latest advances in AI to Education to help improve the lives of teachers and ultimately the learning outcomes of their students. Our leadership team includes talents from IBM, Amazon, Facebook, Roku, Broadcom, HP, Allen Institute for AI, and more. We have come together to build on a unified product experience for an extremely urgent mission – building a digital assistant for teachers, to untether teachers from the desk and help them with managing classroom technologies.

We are looking for an experienced Director of Product Design to help us better connect schools, teachers, and students to Merlyn. What you’ll do:

• Lead multiple design projects, on both the product and corporate side of things. This may include our AI assistant interfaces and brand related designs such as websites and demos. 
• Design multimodal products for our AI assistant that include voice, touch and others. 
• Conduct user requirements analysis, conceptual modeling, UX/UI design, and usability testing for multimodal products including voice. 
• Design experience and interfaces using participatory and iterative design techniques, including usability testing, and other forms of discovery. 
• Produce user requirements specifications, personas, storyboards, scenarios, flowcharts, design prototypes, and design specifications. 
• Create scalable and iterative design systems. 
• Effectively communicate design rationale both verbally and visually. 
• Participate in product ideation and conceptual development. 
• Work closely with development teams to ensure that design specifications are implemented. 
• Create visual design systems. 
• Produce design specifications, wireframes, storyboards, and motion-based prototypes to show design intent and guide implementation. 
• Successfully communicate both verbally and visually. 
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams that includes product leads, project management, business and brand strategists, and hardware and software developers. 

Requirements:

• 5+ years managing projects or teams. 
• 10+ years of experience design. 
• 10+ years of UI (graphics) design for digital products and services. 
• 2+ Familiarity with artificial intelligence and voice interfaces a plus. 
• A tireless advocate for our users and design processes. 
• Wildly creative and obsessively meticulous. 
• A self-starter who enjoys taking the initiative. 
• Exceptional design talents with stylistic breadth that demonstrates sensitivity to diverse subject matter—from product interaction to software tools. 
• Someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is flexible and has high energy to get work done. 
• Strong knowledge of design processes and methodology. 
• Strong project and people management skills. Must be able to function as a project leader as well as an individual contributor. 
• Proficiency with design and prototyping software packages such as AdobeCC, Figma. 
• Someone who loves working with cross-functional partners including engineering, product, research, data, content, sales and our customers. 
• Able to run user interviews ad product testing. 
• Excellent communication and organization skills. 
• Master degree in graphic design, interaction design, or related design discipline. 
• A love of collaboration and learning. 
• A fearless, can do, entrepreneurial and positive attitude.
