About the Team

The Legal & Compliance team supports Sovrn growth by providing oversight and guidance for operating in compliance with our contractual and regulatory obligations. We help Sovrn teams understand the playing field, and participate in relationship building with our customers and partners. Our goal is to assess and address legal and regulatory risk, working cross-functionally across teams while subscribing to Sovrn mission and values.

About the Job

The Privacy System Engineer will report to the Director, Privacy and Compliance, and assist in complying with appropriate regulatory and framework requirements.   You will be the technical advocate for privacy decisions, designs, and discussions, working with engineering and product teams. As a result, you must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment with an affinity for building relationships along with empathy for the challenges facing Sovrn’s internal business teams.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • By providing guidance to development teams, ensure privacy requirements are correctly implemented during the product development life cycle for both new and existing products.
  • Advocate for technical privacy initiatives with the product teams.
  • Collaborate with data product development teams creating new uses of data that employ privacy features.
  • Assist in delivering role-based technical training on data privacy requirements.
  • Partners with Product Management to integrate Sovrn’s privacy compliance and risk management objectives into Sovrn’s product strategy.
  • Maintains a general understanding of the changing privacy regulations that impact technical privacy requirements related to Sovrn’s business (such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA).
  • Develop and create guidelines based on privacy engineering requirements to streamline the narrative on consent management, Privacy by Design, and other processes.
  • Evaluate market and privacy technology trends and evolutions, research privacy-enhancing technologies, and assist with proof of concept projects and validating of privacy controls.
  • Assist with the documentation and updating of data inventories and data mapping.
  • Assist with department initiatives related to internal processes and systems for providing automation in privacy operations.

About You

You are dangerously curious, not afraid to ask questions, and eager to learn about our business.  You understand how technology can create privacy and data security challenges, and are able to articulate requirements to technical teams that allow Sovrn to maintain its compliance posture.  You are comfortable leading your own initiatives and have proven ability to efficiently manage a variety of projects in a timely manner with strong follow through skills. You’re comfortable working with a wide variety of people, and respect the perspectives of those that disagree with you. Above all, you love learning, and sharing what you know.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, privacy engineering or related field of study.
  • 3+ years' experience in privacy / data protection or a graduate degree or concentration in privacy engineering.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate requirements, including negotiating options at management levels.
  • Ability to balance risks in ambiguous and complex situations.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills, in particular in leading or contributing to global and multi-functional technical teams.
  • Ability to analyze systems’ architectures for privacy requirements.
  • Experience with concepts and practices such as threat modeling, data anonymization and classification, auditing access to data, and review of requests for data access, with the objective of recommending controls to mitigate privacy risks.
  • Ability to learn and research new technologies rapidly, assess privacy exposures, and suggest mitigations.

Bonus Points:

  • Demonstrated interest in privacy and/or corporate security (completion of IAPP courses, CIPM/CIPT/CISSP/CDPSE certifications preferred, or familiarity with privacy principles that are common across global laws and regulations).
  • Familiarity with security and privacy standards such as SOC, ISO 27001, NIST, etc.
  • Experience writing test scripts, based on functional requirements.
  • Specific knowledge/experience in ad serving and/or other advertising technology systems.
  • Data literacy: finding and managing data, cleansing data, manipulating data in very large data sets.

Position Reports to: Director, Privacy and Compliance

Location: Boulder, CO or Remote

We understand that no candidate is perfectly qualified for any job. Experience comes in different forms; many skills are transferable; and passion goes a long way. Even more important than your resume is a clear demonstration of accountability impact, and the ability to thrive in a fluid and collaborative environment. We expect you to learn new things in this role, and we encourage you to apply if your experience is close to what we're looking for.
