Job Description

About Checkr
Checkr’s mission is to build a fairer future by designing technology to create opportunities for all. We believe all candidates, regardless of who they are, should have a fair chance to work. Established in 2014 and valued at $5B, Checkr is using technology to bring hiring to the next level. Our People Trust Platform uses machine learning to help thousands of companies modernize their background check process and make hiring safer, more efficient, and more inclusive. Some of our customers include Uber, Instacart, Doordash, Netflix, Compass Group, and Adecco.

A career with Checkr is an opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest minds, disrupt an industry for a better future, and give otherwise overlooked candidates access to employment. Checkr has been recognized as one of BuiltIn's 2023 Best Places to Work in the US and is a Y Combinator 2023 Breakthrough Company and Top Company by Valuation.

As Product and Privacy Counsel at Checkr, you will partner closely with R&D teams throughout the product development lifecycle to help them ship products that meet their goals while mitigating key risks across the full spectrum of regulatory, privacy, and consumer protection legal frameworks.

You will focus on Checkr’s new products developed within Checkr X, our innovation program aimed at finding and bringing to market new product bets for Checkr. For example, Checkr Pay started as part of Checkr X. Checkr Pay rethinks how workers are paid in the gig economy, creating a new experience that better serves both gig platforms and workers alike. If the idea of counseling a high growth startup within a startup sounds more thrilling than terrifying, we want you to join us.

You will also work with Checkr’s Associate General Counsel, Product Compliance, to build our comprehensive privacy program, including work in areas like data processing agreements, product privacy reviews, DSARs, and more.

What you’ll do

  • Provide creative legal guidance to R&D teams across a variety of subject matter areas.
  • Serve as primary legal support for Checkr X products, including Checkr’s fintech product, Checkr Pay.
  • Be responsive and empathetic to customer compliance needs and partner with R&D in compliance research and discovery to design new products and services.
  • Play a critical role in building Checkr’s privacy program.
  • Stay up to date on new legislation, industry enforcement, litigation trends, and employment best practices to develop proactive compliance programs aligned with our suite of products.
  • Directly contribute to Checkr’s mission to unblock employment barriers for record impacted individuals by building trusted compliance partnerships with our customers and solutioning practical fair chance hiring models.

What you bring

  • JD and a minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience. Product counseling and/or in-house experience at a technology company strongly preferred.
  • Licensed member of any state bar and in good standing.
  • Experience providing actionable legal guidance to non-legal stakeholders (preferably product teams).
  • You’re a collaborative and creative problem solver. You find a solution to every problem and demonstrate empathy along the way.
  • You’re a learner and an educator. You can easily break down complicated laws and regulatory frameworks into understandable and approachable language.
  • Privacy counseling experience is a plus but not required.

What you’ll get

  • A fast-paced and collaborative environment
  • Learning and development allowance
  • Competitive compensation and opportunity for advancement
  • 100% medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Up to $25K reimbursement for fertility, adoption, and parental planning services
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Monthly wellness stipend, home office stipend

One of Checkr’s core values is Transparency. To live by that value, we’ve made the decision to disclose salary ranges in all of our job postings. We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop ranges for our roles and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range. If this role is remote, we have listed the top to the bottom of the possible range, but we will specify the target range for an exact location when you are selected for a recruiting discussion. For more information on our compensation philosophy, see our website.

The salary range for this role is $106,633 to $221,950.
