As a Product Designer at Zello, you will work with fellow designers to design new features from the ground-up. From foundational exploration and research through prototyping and testing, you’ll help yours (and our) vision come to life. Analyzing a problem space, researching competitors, proposing solutions, usability testing your designs, revising, revising more, and finally handing off for development, you’ll see projects through in all their forms. 

Whereas many designers approach their work with a heuristic analysis, you balance heuristics with research. Our 175+ million users span all levels of technical prowess and ability, and we’ve learned that what’s best for many users isn’t what’s best for others. We have projects on deck that will require the combined creative/design and research/testing approach that you bring to the table. From testing and designing Zello Web Console updates to usability testing basic changes to our single-duplex model, your work will be foundational and impactful.

Responsibilities

• Identifying the research needs for projects as they kick off

• Writing, sharing, and enacting project plans for your work from inception through research, design, testing, and revision

• Developing discussion guides for user sessions

• Working in low and high fidelity as necessary

• Creating, prototyping, and testing your own designs

• Spec’ing your designs for engineering handoff

• Collaborating with other designers to ensure best research and testing practices 

• Presenting research findings and design recommendations to colleagues and leadership

What we’re looking for

• 3-5 years of design experience.

• Wide-ranging ability — you’ll both plan and enact your projects.

• Open communication — bring collaborators into their work. A tree falling alone in a forest is less impactful than one that’s heard, and for your recommendations to make impact, you need buy-in and education.

• Readiness to learn — some Zello employees have been around for over a decade, and have immersive knowledge regarding our users’ unique needs, while others interact with customer tickets daily. Be prepared to integrate inductive internal research with generative user research.

• A hybrid of heuristics and inductive research. There are usability basics that apply to all users, but the story doesn’t end there.

• A background in digital products with complex, diverse userbases. Our app serves frontline workers to HAM radio enthusiasts to Latin American teens.

• Familiarity with and confidence in Sketch

• Experience building low fidelity prototypes in Figma, Sketch, Principle, or a comparable tool

• Familiarity building high fidelity prototypes in Origami (preferable), Framer, or a comparable tool

• Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JS
