R&D / Product Development Engineer

BD Interventional Surgery, located in Warwick, RI and Vernon Hills, IL, is a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of innovative, life-enhancing medical technologies. We focus our business on key surgical specialties, including Surgical Instruments, Soft Tissue Repair, Surgical Fixation, Infection Prevention, Biomaterials and Orthopedic/Wound Management Irrigation.

BDI Surgery is situated in a central location, surrounded by a scenic coastline with easy access to T.F. Green Airport, AMTRAK Train Stations and Route 95, a major highway connecting to Providence, Connecticut, Boston and New York City within a short amount of time.

Summary/Purpose of Position

The Product Development Engineer is responsible for providing design engineering technical leadership on cross-functional product development teams during the pre-concept, development, design and documentation for manufacture of new and improved surgical implants or related medical products.

As an independent contributor, the Product Development Engineer must be able to coordinate and implement concurrent engineering practices either within the organization during an organic product development process or when working with and external development partner. Also, the Product Development Engineer may have direct reports or must be able to guide, mentor and develop lower-level engineers and technicians.

Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities

  • Contribute to developing new product designs in a cross-functional team environment requiring an ability to develop innovative solutions that address our customer needs by overcoming mechanical, materials and manufacturing process design challenges.
  • Leading and contributing to product development meetings, which will include representatives from Marketing, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Quality, and other functions.
  • Designing and executing benchtop and preclinical experiments to characterize prototypes and select devices
  • Supports establishing design specification and defining the relationship between the design specifications and the critical design features, including the development of clinically relevant test methods that verify the product meeting the specifications.
  • Evaluating product prototypes with simulated anatomy that mimics characteristics of human tissue and abnormalities.
  • Developing and writing test methods, protocols, and reports
  • Documenting of all test results and assembly processes.
  • Coordinating and supporting dFMEA and component level dFMEA activities, establishing mitigation plans & executing on relevant functional testing to ensure safe and effective products are developed.
  • Generate product development documentation and reports using appropriate technical writing.
  • Schedules and conducts design review and technical review meetings
  • Contributing technical content for regulatory submissions
  • Creating/inventing new concepts and designs/approaches for new products/processes/test methods.
  • Participating in innovation challenges sponsored by the organization
  • Communicating technical results/findings to a broad audience of varied technical expertise
  • Identifying areas for improvement, suggesting solutions, and submitting invention disclosures
  • Special projects as assigned

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • BS or MS engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar field. The candidate should be a driven individual with an interest in medical device development.
  • Broad knowledge and use of implantable devices.
  • Knowledge of GMP's, current FDA Medical Devices legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Good verbal and written communication with all levels of technical and operating management
  • Experience with CAD/CAM and design analysis software (mechanisms and FEA), statistical analysis techniques, and geometric dimensioning and tolerance is preferred.

  • Direct project responsibility for design and development of new and improved products
  • Performance against schedule affects commitments made in the division business plan
  • Recommends product specifications, drawings, documents and changes as they pertain to any new products or product modification
  • International Dossier's and regulatory submission
  • Intellectual Property submissions
