Product Specialist - Performance Modules
Job Description
SMS group Inc., headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, seeks a Product Specialist - Performance Modules to work in Pittsburgh, PA or as a work-from-home position (with the ability to telecommute with appropriate telecommuting systems), responsible for design, developing, testing, and enhancing Performance Modules (i.e., electronics and automation systems) used to ensure the proper operation of Long Products for continuous casting and rolling/finishing equipment as well as providing technical support and service. Specific responsibilities will include: (i) evaluating and enhancing/developing the Long Products Performance Modules; (ii) reviewing reference lists to quantify current install base for performance modules (i.e., electronics and automation systems); (iii) identifying design/ operating issues affecting the performance of each module, and plan and develop upgrades to electronic engineering properties of applications used in Long Product modules to improve technical performance; (iv) providing project and field services support in managing customer technical and business expectations as well as recommending repair or design modifications of electronics and automation components based on system requirements; (v) preparing engineering diagrams and sketches related to the installation of Long Product modules (i.e., electronics and automation systems) as well as reports and plans for successful conduct of the project given site preparation, installation, quality assurance, and testing; (vi) testing the effectiveness and technical adequacy of engineering activities to determine project and equipment changes and recommending repair, design modifications, and/or updates of Long Product equipment, particularly the Performance Modules (i.e., electronics and automation systems) that govern the operation of the equipment; (vii) providing technical assistance and support to customers and working directly with other customers to ensure technical and business needs are met; (viii) ascertaining customer engineering requirements, evaluating feasibility, developing technical solutions to meet customer's requirements, and supporting the preparation of proposals/quotations, including: scope of supply, cost estimates, technical specifications, and proposal drawings with an emphasis on electronics and automation systems; (ix) supporting the Long Products equipment reconditioning and manufacturing business to ensure conformance to technical standards and customer specifications; (x) working with Product Managers to initiate and ensure proper upgrades of Long Product equipment and related Performance Modules (i.e., electronics and automation systems); (xi) providing plans for development of additional business opportunities and product growth by analyzing electronics and automation system requirements, capacity cost, or customer needs to determine various project feasibilities; and (xii) representing, explaining, and exchanging information regarding the function, design, costs, repairs, and system capabilities of SMS' Long Product electronics and automation properties and equipment at conferences, panels, meetings, and clients in support of the sales function.
Must possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, or a directly related field plus 2 years of experience in an automation, electronics and/or instrumentation engineering role charged with maintaining digital controllers (PLCs) and laser measurement systems in Long Products used for the continuous casting and rolling/finishing of steel equipment. Two-year experience must include servicing Level 1 and Level 2 systems based on Rockwell, AllenBradley, and Siemens platforms.
Must know (from any completed university-level coursework, seminars, workshops, or real-world, hands-on experience): steel making process for long products, including the processes and equipment used in melting, casting, and rolling steel; automation for long product steel mills, including steel making, continuous casting, continuous and reversing rolling); Level I automation for production processes, including control of equipment and production processes; Level 2 automation, including supervision and control of production scheduling and management information functions; optical measurement systems, including laser based section measuring devices; laser optics, camera systems, fiber-optic data transmission and related industrial computing used in evaluating and maintaining equipment; digital reconstruction of shapes and measurements based on laser optical imaging; continuous casting process, including methods of detecting mold level (radioactive and thermocouple based); continuous casting mold oscillation principles and the means and methods to controlling it; and robotic applications for steel mills, including tagging robots and their imaging methods.
Must be able and willing to travel domestically to various unanticipated employer and client locations up to 20%.
