The Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) Department works to ensure outstanding instruction in every classroom. Sustainable implementation of high-quality curriculum is the most critical driver of that aim and supports the growth of teachers, administrators, counselors, and librarians at various stages throughout their careers. We aspire to ground our C&I work in a set of shared elements. We start with an understanding of how students learn; we organize around adult learning principles to support teachers and school leaders; we embed opportunities to modify curriculum materials for specific classroom contexts or student needs; and we organize everything around continuous improvement to get better over time. Position Summary

The Professional Learning Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and monitoring instructional coaching and professional learning supports (including coaching, workshops, and strategizing with NYC Public Schools central office team)  for schools receiving coaching through any cross-content literacy projects. They will also serve on the cross-content team in C&I. The ideal candidate will be able to make sense of competing and rapidly changing priorities in teaching and learning at NYC Public Schools -- through collaboration with both New Visions staff and staff from various central offices -- then both craft and maintain a system for support that is transparent and comprehensive. This is not a supervisory position.

The Professional Learning Manager role involves the following major bodies of work:

  • In collaboration with New Visions staff, teacher leaders, and external experts, gain an understanding of existing literacy resources, both in New Visions’ curriculum and other high-quality instructional materials and across content areas.
  • Develop and implement professional learning opportunities that support teachers in understanding their curriculum, shifting standards, and instructional moves that support student reading, writing, speaking and thinking;
  • Coach teachers and instructional leaders using research-based literacy approaches and shared high quality instructional materials our as a foundation for building school-based instructional capacity; and
  • Stay informed of shifts in the field (including the science of reading, NY State Standards, Regents, and national standards) and develop materials to inform instructional leaders and teachers about these shifts. 

This role requires deep and consistent collaboration with Curriculum team members, as well as New Visions’ school-facing staff in School Support.  It also requires a thoughtful exchange with the teachers who are enrolled in literacy support projects and/or schools interested in participating.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Work with staff from the Superintendent’s office, NYC Public Schools and other key individuals to:

  • Identify priorities for literacy instructional support that are current or emerging
  • Learn about relevant data informing New Visions’ and NYC PS decisions
  • Ensure coaching through New Visions aligns with NYC PS citywide literacy needs

Work with New Visions staff in C&I, School Support to: 

  • Identify areas of need in schools
  • Define and elevate shared, cross-curricular instructional routines and strategies
  • Develop and implement teacher professional learning -- including coaching, workshops, and other formats -- grounded in shared curricular resources and shared instructional routines and strategies
  • Develop and manage coaching plans that support both teachers and instructional leaders in developing school-based capacity
  • Build systems and tools that better support schools, teachers, and school leaders.
  • Continue to clarify the instructional coaching model for various support situations.
  • Build coherence around how we work

Education and Experience: 

  • Masters-level degree
  • Minimum of 10 total years of experience in education, middle or high school experience preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising, coaching, or leading teachers
  • Experience in urban public schools preferred

Required Skill Sets and Knowledge Base

  • Excellent written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including strong facilitation skills
  • Experience at the high school and/or middle school level in reading instruction and/or literacy background
  • Experience supporting educators with reading and literacy through professional learning and coaching
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and within situations with a high degree of uncertainty and change
  • Experience leading a team and collaborating with others in a way that inspires respect among peers
  • Experience leading a team and collaborating with others, using data to drive organizational change 
  • Demonstrated commitment to data-driven decision-making, continuous improvement, systems thinking, and adult learning as drivers of improved student outcomes 
  • Understanding of instructional coaching models and frameworks for adult learning
  • Strong service and support orientation towards schools and school communities
  • Understanding of project management through the use of tools such as Asana and Google Sheets

Salary Information
While the majority of new hires’ starting salaries shall be expected to be placed in the first half of the range(s) to allow space to grow in the job, for those who already have significant relevant experience at that level of the job, placement at the higher end of the range(s) is possible.

Pay Range

$80,211$128,337 USD
