SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Amtrak's ADA Stations Program is a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar effort bringing all of Amtrak's stations and passenger facilities into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADASP (ADA Stations Program) implements design and construction of infrastructure improvements to provide accessibly to Amtrak's intercity rail transportation system. Working as a Principal Architect within the Amtrak's ADA Stations Team, you will be responsible for all architectural aspects of a station project for the ADA Stations Program. You will actively lead projects and workstreams per Amtrak and project requirements as well as utilize assistance from the department staff and input from other organizational departments as needed for the work. Ensure conditions and solutions are fit-for-purpose, safe, secure, sustainable, and aesthetically complimentary. Create, monitor, refine and report fiscal, schedule, and quality baselines through the project duration. Process requests for information and documents including submittals. Develop, issue, and electronically file project and record documents. Review and close out projects to ensure Amtrak's goals, project criteria, and regulatory requirements are integrated prior to the station or facility returning to service.

This position works collaboratively and in coordination with all Amtrak departments, the Federal Railroad Administration, and other U.S. DOT agencies, Congress, States and localities, commuter and freight operators, and suppliers, other third parties, investors, and stakeholders to develop strategies, plans, funding and finance approaches, and partnerships to advance Amtrak's mission. The Principal Architect serves as Amtrak's representative to manage and coordinate with external entities such as design consultants (Designer of Record-DOR) Host Railroads, General Contractors, State Historic Preservation Offices and Local Authorities. Must be flexible and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

This is a remote role based on the east coast

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides design assistance to the Project Manager with regards to Designer of Record and enforces Amtrak standards with a focus on ADA compliance.
  • Provides design assistance and oversight to the Project Manager with regards to General Contractor during Construction Phase Services (CPS)
  • Coordinates with internal Amtrak departments such as Stations and Facilities, Passenger Operations, Engineering, Legal, Real Estate and Government Affairs.
  • Coordinates with external stakeholders to include the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Third-Party Entities to include municipal authorities and private property owners.
  • Ability to maintain Schedules, prepare reports and presentations, edit specifications, review change orders and shop drawings.
  • Perform ADA site assessments at Amtrak Stations.
  • Assist in preparing scope documents and concept drawings.
  • Ability to travel periodically to Amtrak stations nationwide.
  • Assist Project Managers with ongoing reviews of projects, designs, and schedules in accordance with Amtrak standards.
  • Adheres to Amtrak Enterprise Project Management methodology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong project architectural skills in design and organizational skills with interest in renovation, transportation, and historic preservation.
  • Must be experienced with the International Building Code(s), ANSI A117.1 and ADA Guidelines, Department of Transportation Accessible Standards (DOTAS) 2006.
  • Strong focus on collaboration, team leadership, and customer service
  • Effectiveness working diplomatically across teams with varying objectives.
  • Strong oral, analytical, and written communication skills across all levels
  • Ability to organize and present project designs, reports, proposals, and other related information.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Adobe and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must have work authorization in the United States.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7-10 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Registered Architect
  • Understanding of contract documents (Design to Construction Phase Services), contract administration including its assessment and implementation at each phase of the project.
  • Transportation Industry background

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The salary/hourly range is $114,830 - $148,820. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
