Job Summary: The Project Engineering Director interacts internally with project level management and peers across business development, marketing, product development, engineering and technology to stimulate thinking about how to integrate all channels to create a seamless customer experience. Once developed, incumbents in this position will work with stakeholders to structure, influence, and guide short and long-term growth plans, strategies and schedules. She/he will drive architecture of the solution, delivery of measurable results and provide customers from project proposal to installation to ongoing upgrades and maintenance with a sound customer experience strategy. Responsible for the technical performance, schedule and budgets of assigned projects, driving execution, communicating needs and progressing the engineering solutions for large and critical projects and products. This position typically works under limited supervision and direction, and incumbents will regularly exercise discretionary and substantial decision-making authority associated with the technical scope.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participates with senior management to establish strategic plans and objectives. Makes final decisions on implementation and ensures operational effectiveness. Effectively cascades functional strategy and contributes to development of organizational policies. Accountable for actions that impact function or multiple department budgets.
- Works on complex issues where problems are not clearly defined and where fundamental principles do not fully apply. Translates business segment strategy into functional plans and guides execution. Participates in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people. Ensures budgets and schedules meet corporate requirements.
- Contributes to development of strategies of a function or multi departments. Erroneous decisions will have a critical long term (typically up to five years) impact on the overall success of function or multi departments.
- Interacts with senior management, executives, and/or major customers which frequently involves negotiating matters of significance to the organization. Reconciles multiple stakeholder views to drive business results.
- Defines and communicates the engineering vision and organizational structure from proposal stage through ongoing delivery.
- Work with functional managers to secure engineering resources needed to successfully execute the project
- Works closely with all departments to understand and identify ways deliver tangible improvements in end to end experience for internal and external stakeholders.
- Develops a deep understanding of customer requirements and needs and communicates with all departments to develop customer focused solutions.
- Works with all departments and internal stakeholders to understand their needs, communicate the customers' needs to assure project accuracy and make sure project stay on schedule.
- Investigates new technologies, applications, services, tools, and trends to drive customer service excellence and operational efficiency.
- Participates and advises during the initial stages of new product development/improvement.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable law. Such responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; motivating, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Coordinates and leads project level design reviews for technology and services that relate to all levels of the customer.
- Collaborate with engineers, operations, program management, product management, and other stakeholders to implement solutions and transitions from project to operations.
- Working with a team of stakeholders, develops and presents the business case for new products or solutions to all levels of the organization
- Aligns data from our internal Quality Assurance strategies with voice of the customer feedback from products, services teams, and related surveys to deliver insights and suggestions to the business.
- Stays current with and ensures alignment with marketplace trends / innovations within the industry and across other industries.
- Refines existing processes and develops new processes that help predictably deliver value to our customers, drive renewal rates, upsell rates, and early adoption rates.
- Builds consensus with teammates across the organization and gives clear direction during cross-functional collaboration. Motivates teammates to build trusting, cross-functional relationships.
- Develops a high degree of trust and accountability with key internal clients and stakeholders.
- Mentor and coach other engineering team members.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Four-year college degree, in engineering, business management, marketing, design strategy or related field, plus a minimum of ten years related experience. Masters Degree and experience in technology, defense or transportation industries preferred. Ability to logically troubleshoot complex technical issues with many moving parts. Must have excellent management, communication and analytical skills. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact in extremely delicate, sensitive and/or complex situations. Proven ability to build strong collaborative business relationships, develop and implement a strategy and drive change. Both domestic and international travel required approximately 40% of time.
