Job Description

The Project Manager is an integral member of the Project Management team and is responsible for the planning, execution and delivery of high-quality projects on-time, on-budget and within scope. Daily functions include management of multiple projects simultaneously while continually seeking to capitalize on opportunities to drive operational efficiencies and increase stakeholder satisfaction. The Project Manager has a deep understanding of Politico's digital systems and capabilities to provide solutions to a variety of business and technical challenges.

The Project Manager has experience in the latest project management tools and methodologies, and collaborates with leadership to establish and champion an approach to consistent project management best practices across the company.

What You'll Do:

  • Engage with Product Management and Technology leadership to define the overall goals, scope, work breakdown, and milestones for major releases of POLITICO products
  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams through all phases of the project life cycle, providing coaching, guidance, motivation and inspiration
  • Efficiently manage and deliver multiple simultaneous projects on budget, on time, on schedule, and above stakeholder's expectations
  • Manage all aspects of each project: scope, risk, schedule, budget, quality, and communication
  • Bring fresh ideas and perspective that improve product quality and outcomes
  • Works closely with all Technology team resources to remove impediments discovered during the project
  • Bring groups together to ensure teams remain focused. Maintain an attitude of commitment and exhibit responsibility for the needs of the team members
  • Facilitate the sprint and release planning to ensure the overall objectives of projects are met
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the project team, including sprint cycles, daily standups, task assignment, project milestones, demos and status
  • Support and lead stakeholders through the change management process for any scope or schedule modifications required for successful development and implementation of new product capabilities
  • Identify and track areas of risk, develop mitigation plans, and build consensus on key project decisions
  • Monitor third-party vendor activities to ensure compliance with contract expectations and company standards
  • Work upward, downward, and laterally in the organization to ensure project success
  • Track and communicate project metrics so the team and senior management have a clear read on status and the information needed to report on actual spend against budget throughout the project
  • Facilitate retrospectives and modify processes based on feedback
  • Continually improve project management practices throughout the company
  • Ability to lead cross-functional project teams
  • Accuracy of work and support of team
  • Deliver projects on budget, on schedule, and within agreed upon scope
  • Meet established deadlines
  • Identify, prioritize and follow through on project-related issues that arise from stakeholders
  • Accurately assess and hold team members accountable for outcomes
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with other engineering leads, upper management as well as employees from other departments on status and priorities and solutions


What You'll Need:

  • 3+ years of experience leading medium to large software technology projects (e.g. software development, system implementations, business analysis, and process re-engineering) through all phases of the project lifecycle
  • Experience in working in an agile/lean environment
  • Experience managing concurrent tasks, projects, and agile teams
  • Experience with bug tracking and sprint planning software a must. Experience with JIRA preferred.
  • Understanding of web technologies such as JavaScript, HTTP, REST, Responsive Design, and APIs is preferred, but not required
  • Working knowledge of user experience principles
  • Proven troubleshooting and problem solving skills to aid in the identification of root cause issues and development of creative solutions
  • A desire to work independently and manage your own workload, combined with an openness to collaborate on key project deliverables
  • Enthusiasm for the agility, flexibility, and unpredictability of working in a dynamic organization
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • PMP certification preferred but not required
